You have to be pretty desperate to lie to the police about getting raped. But that's just what the wife of a founder of the Ozarks Minutemen, an anti-immigration group, was when she called the cops. Angela D. Willburn has been charged with filing a false report after investigators determined her story about being raped and shot by three Hispanic men last December was a crock.
Wilburn, 44, was charged with filing a false report, a class B misdemeanor, and then held on $500 bond. "My wife made a mistake, a big mistake," Brian Wilburn told reporters after his wife's arrest. Wilburn helped form the Ozarks Minutemen, a community group that is similar to, but separate from, the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps.
"It had nothing to do with the Minutemen, it was just a bad decision on her part," Wilburn went on to say. His story is that his wife was investigating suspicious noises at their home near Brookline when she accidentally shot herself in the knee. "She was seriously injured — she's not yet recovered the use of her leg — and she panicked and got caught in a bad situation," Brian Wilburn said. "I don't know why, and I don't know how else to deal with this except being straight up."
According to a probable cause statement filed in the case, Angela Wilburn called 911 early on December 8 saying someone had shot her. When she was interviewed at St. John's hospital later that day, she told a Greene County detective that three Hispanic men broke into her home. One of the men sexually assaulted her in the hallway of her mobile home, she said, then shot her in the knee with a handgun. After a few follow-up questions from detectives, Wilburn decided to come clean.
"Angela eventually stated to me that she had accidentally shot herself in the knee," Detective Kenny Weatherford wrote in the probable cause statement. "She stated that she heard a noise and grabbed her husband's gun and was reaching for a flashlight when the gun went off. She stated to me that no one broke into her house and that she was not raped. She stated it was an accident and she made it up because she was scared and embarrassed." Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites
