    Verdict

American Police Beat article "Verdict is a disaster for law enforcement"

After reading this I wonder how the California case involving the teenager pointing the toy AK-47 at the sheriff's deputies, will turn out.

Civil judgments are meaningless. They are more about juror emotions than any kind of thoughtful analysis of facts and laws. I will never let a fear of a civil suit interfere with my judgment. You can do your job perfectly and still get sued and lose. I've been sued before for work and know how pointless it really is. All about squeezing money from insurance and government.

Something my dad always used to say:

"Better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6."

Here's the article: Verdict is a disaster for law enforcement

I seldom like the tried by 12 truism -- but this is one case where I do. The article references the civil decision in the Zerby shooting case where a couple of California officers responded to a man with a gun call, and eventually shot a guy brandishing a gun-like water nozzle.

I agree with the author of the APB piece: I hope nobody hesitates in a similar situation over this decision. Bottom line is that we go home at the end of our shift, and we shouldn't be required to carelessly or needlessly justify that. Doesn't mean we don't go into danger -- that's the job. But do it smart, and stay as safe as you can. Honestly, I hate to say this but the firefighters are light years ahead of us on that front. They do a lot of very dangerous things -- but they take a lot of safety precautions, every time. How many times do we as patrol officers go confidently into situations with little more than our body armor and sidearm... even when we know that there are armed, angry, drunk idiots in there...
