Hi. Question from future federal law enforcement agent
I recently received confirmation of employment with a federal agency I've wanted to work for all my life. It feels great
, and I look forward to joining you all in the brotherhood of law enforcement.
I have educational and private sector credentials that have qualified me for this job. However, I have no prior law enforcement experience.
I have a question. I will not be doing policing in my future job but I think the value of "street smarts" that local law enforcement officers develop cannot be underestimated. My question is, how valuable would an experience like a Ride Along be? Are there other experiences you could suggest that I should seek in the near future to prepare myself? I have a few months before the academy.

You certainly can do ride on patrol if you'd like. Most local/state/federal law enforcement agencies know when they hire someone who hasn't had prior law enforcement experience that you're "green" or a "rookie". That experience and street smarts will come with time.

Congrats on the new gig. What agency are you going to? What kind of work do you do now? Any military experience? Just curious.
I would say that you should take full advantage of as many ride along opportunities that you can. Talk to veteren officers and learn how they deal with people.
Good luck.

Thanks. No military experience. My background is a B.S. in Computer Science with private sector work in computer forensics.
Also, any suggested reading?

I'd add On Killing and On Combat by David Grossman, and you'd probably benefit from grabbing a used an introduction to criminal justice textbook at a nearby college. That'll give you a good overview of the entire criminal justice system, at both the state and federal levels. Most of what you need to know will be covered in training or through experience -- but it never hurts to have that framework to put it on.
Do a ride along, if you want. At least you'll have seen what the working cops do

go stand in the corner Bettern walking a beat in the rain. At least I will know the FED
are nice and comfy in their offices drinking coffee and patting themselves on the back
for doing such a fine job getting out of bed and to the office on time for their mid-morning coffee break

All in fun of course, otherwise we would have to pick on JENNA all the time

We usually take the equitable sharing money that should go to the locals and use it to hire someone to pat our backs for us.Bettern walking a beat in the rain.
