Why did you become a LEO
Hello all,
This is for the LEO'S.
I am in the process of becoming a LEO and when they ask me why I want to be a police officer, I am not sure what to say. What would/did you say?
Thanks

What they are looking for is why you want to be police. What were the reasons you chose this field? The job isn't for people who made the choice on a whim. You have to be dedicated to what you do or you will not be a good investment for the department that hires you. So, why did you choose police?
And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
In Nomine Patris, Et Filli, Et Spiritus Sancti.

Not on a whim choice, I've wanted to be a LEO my whole life. Back in the early 80's came as close as ever. Only 5 of us left when it came down to the wire. Hired three (not me). Then life got in the way. Moved up here from West Houston/ Katy Texas area. More like a calling than a choice really. I want to serve my community. Help people that need/want help. I know I can not save the world, however I can get as many bad people off the street as I can.

Is this one of those questions they ask on a review board that is not right or wrong?.... Really don't want to say it is a calling, would not want them to think I hear voices in my head...

I don't know about the US but I know overhere they are lloking for something more original than "I want to help the community"
Try "I want to take criminals off the street and protect decent citizens from them"
However you should in know way take my comments as reliable as I am a cynical long serving officer who has no comprehension as to what is in the higher up's heads these days!the sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.

I wanted to meet people here in Chicago of different and interesting cultures and arrest them. I wanted to be the first kid on my block to get a class X felony arrest.

I told them I got sick and tired of watching idiot drivers do stupid things and not being able to do anything about it. Also, I found all my real friends were LE. Then on 9/11 I got called up as an Augmentee with the AF Security Forces. I loved it.

I wanted the ability to wake up every day and not have any idea what was going to happen next.
I also loved the idea of the general public becoming my best source of entertainment and humor.
This job is really hillarious and serious at the same time..http://www.allpoetry.com/Grunts%20Girl
We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Don't be intimidated... just go into the interview room, kick your feet up on the desk (or table), and boldly say:
"Um... anyway, I wanna be a cop because cops can, like, kick people's asses and get away with it, you know? Oh, and like... those guns are kewl too... yeah, you know. I wanna be able to like, drive real fast and not get a ticket, like, ever, you know?" Make sure you twitch
one eye while you answer too, that always helps.
Just kidding... seriously: be yourself, answer the questions thoughtfully and honestly, speak clearly, don't fidget, lean forward in your seat, look your interviewers in the eyes (but not aggressively), and have a business-like (military) bearing about you. Use 'sir' and 'ma'am', and be respectful without seeming timid. You'll do fine.

I'm just a nosey som'a bitch. I like the action and the thrill of the unknown. When it comes to calls for service you may deal with the same people on a regular basis but for the most part it is something different everyday. When you make a traffic stop and the violator is acting shady it becomes something like a mystery novel, trying to put the clues ( where he/she is coming from or going, body language, bullshit story) together to solve the case. Before you know it you got them figured out then BAMMM!! you got someone in a stolen car wanted for murder or they are just ridin dirty. Sorry guys/gals I got alittle off course there for a sec.
Anyway like I was saying I chose this career because I wanted to help my community.Wise men stand behind me, brave men stand beside me, but only fools stand against me.
The force that propels you to prevail when you are put to a test of survival will be a mindset that refuses to accept nothing but winning.
Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to reach out and bitch slap that motherf*cker upside the head.
