Around here it will.
I started in our co. jail before getting hired with the city PD.
I found the experience I got in the jail was priceless once I got on the street.

Alot of Dept. in my area make deputies start in the jail and work their way to a road spot.

That is one of your best tools when you hit the streets. Knowing who you are dealing with before you REALLY deal with them is a plus. If you are not good with faces and names then you better learn to be, or carry around a thugs and mugs book. Also practice safe pat down methods while working corrections and it will carry over to the streets. Nothing is routine, always be ready. Congrats and good luck

Ryan I think this a great way to begin in law enforcement and remember that "a foot in the door is always better than that door being slammed in your face."

Not too sound like a dick Ryan, but when you become a C.O you are a Officer, if you wanna be a police officer say so, but stop throwing around the word Officer. I'm a Peace Officer and I'm proud of my occupation, when you say you still want to be a "Officer" I personally take it as demeaning, because it makes me wonder what you consider Correctional Officers? Just food for thought. Congrats on getting hired and good luck.

you are not gonna learn in a class what it feels like to have that steel slam shut behind you confining you inside the walls with those animals.
its a real wake up call buddy. make sure you are prepared mentally and physically.
other than that, congrats on getting hired, and good luck in your pursuit of a police officer positionin the warriors code there's no surrender, though his body says stop, his spirit cries...NEVER. deep in our souls, a quiet ember, knows its you against you, its the paradox that drives us all. its a battle of wills, in the heat of attack, its the passion that kills, and victory is yours alone.

It will most likely help you, if nothing else transporting inmates, handcuffing inmates, and searches will give you a leg up on the LE side. Alot of cops around here started as C.O.'s in the county jail. Bottom line is will it help? probably..... Can it hurt? absolutely not

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion
