NCIC #
I work with missing and UID's and was wondering why not all LE add this number to thier cases ? And why they dont submit all cases to NCIC, ? I have found that the LE that do add them have to keep adding the cases to NCIC because they are purged.
I cant seem to get a straight answer from my LE buddys i work with on this .
Any help on this is great.

NCIC is a computerized index of criminal justice information (i.e.- criminal record history information, fugitives, stolen properties, missing persons).
The purpose for maintaining the NCIC system is to provide a computerized database for ready access by a criminal justice agency making an inquiry and for prompt disclosure of information in the system from other criminal justice agencies about crimes and criminals. This information assists authorized agencies in criminal justice and related law enforcement objectives, such as apprehending fugitives, locating missing persons, locating and returning stolen property, as well as in the protection of the law enforcement officers encountering the individuals described in the system.

The cases are purged only if you don't keep up with 'em. If you follow the things you enter, you just have to verify that the item or person is still being sought.

So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.

NCIC is restricted access, users are logged. NCIC doesnt solve crimes by itself, but detectives use it to supplement plain old good police work, to establish links and time-lines. It contains records, acts as a gatekeeper, and switches users into other state, local, or foreign systems as well. Canada has a simillar system that is linked by NCIC for US LE inquiries, and CDN LE can see our data. Like any computer system, it's records functions are only as good as the formatted data contributed by users, otherwise its garbage in = garbage out. Records must be updated, every authorized agency or comm center has a person assigned to NCIC records updates.
Incomplete or old records degrade the system. Some of the old record problems I encountered were uncleared records for wanteds or stolens. I had occasionally released people when the agency posting the record could not, in reasonable time, locate, confirm, or validate a record for arrest, recovery, or extradition. Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.-- Anonymous

Personal experience I've had makes me wonder if the UID database on NCIC is so rarely used, that many agencies' personnel don't even know it exists. Even if they know about it, the process of entering dental records and other descriptors is fairly technical, most agency TAC's (Terminal Agency Coordinators) haven't a clue how to do it.

Or... Not every case meets the criteria for NCIC or even state database submission.
The raw volume of cases means that there has to be criteria, or the system would be so overloaded that searches would take days...
Also, some agencies maintain the NCIC numbers separately from the basic case report; in other words, it may have been entered, but there's no notation in the report you see. Especially since, outside of a few exceptions, we only release redacted reports, if at all.

There are a lot of ways that NCIC could be a greater asset to LE, but most LEOs and TACs are not familiar with the system to that extent. If you ask me, interagency communication has gone to sh&$ since I first started and many of NCICs features are geared towards that communication.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."
