    Smile Training question

    I am preparing for the physical test offered by the California Highway Patrol. I am already doing an exercise program based on their training standards. I know that one area I have a lot of trouble in is going over a wall/fence. What suggestions do you offer to help me at least get one foot over this obstacle. Thanks!

    Practice and learn technique. Try to train with others that have no problem with the obstacle and watch and see how they do it.

    Here is a video of one of the instructors performing the NYPD "Job Standard Test". The first obstacle is either a six foot chain-link fence or solid wooden wall. The video shows a chain-link fence, but unless you are climbing up the chains, the method you use is the same.

    Depending upon your height you may want to try different techniques.

    In the video the officer takes a running start and simultaneously kicks/steps up with his left foot on the wall and swings his right leg over. If you can get enough of a running start or are tall enough, once you get an arm or leg over the momentum and weight of your body will swing you over to the other side. Just make sure not to fall on your duff.

    I've seen some shorter people take an entirely different approach. Reach up and grab onto the ledge. While holding on "walk" up the wall so your body is bent like >. Swing one leg over and then let your center of gravity swing you to the right side.

    If you know that you'll be tested on a solid wall or any other specific event - start practicing now. There are probably schools or parks in your area with similar obstacles that you can practice on. Good luck.
