Odd question but I have a personal cell and while on duty I have a department cell that is assigned to my patrol car. I rarely use it.

Yep. Carry my personal Razr, and an airport cell phone. (I'm the supervisor for my SO's Airport Security Division, and "on call" 24/7.)

Personal phone assigned to car.
I also have an assigned mobile for when I am acting as family liason officer in fatal collisions. So when I have a job on I can have up to three mobiles.
Only plus is I have no friends so no one rings on my own phone!the sole advantage of power is that you can do more good.

Department now pays for part of our cell phones and got rid of the phones assigned to each car, so I carry one.

I just have my personal cell phone. We used to have a cell phone in each patrol car. Since we got our new CAD/MDT system, we got rid of those phones. We replaced the phones with the air cards that are now in our laptops. The supervisors and IT manager all still have their phones.

Your explorer post issues you a cell phone?

I have a personal cell (Blackberry), and a department issued Nextel. Patrol isn't "technically" on call, but unofficially we are required to have them on us 24/7. I say we're technically not on call (i.e. we don't get paid), but officers are often paged out for crime scene support, OT coverage, etc. We're a small PD, and we also frequently call eachother to swap days off, shoot the shit, etc. Nextel is great for that. I'm also a gang suppression officer and newly assigned to our SWAT team as a sniper, so you'll never catch me without it."If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970

Yes, my RazR is my personal phone which I love, but as I am working in the shipyard I can't take it with me. You can't have any camera phones, so my second phone is a barebones phone with no camera or extras.
