Scooter Laws
I have been riding my 50cc Honda Scooter for 3 weeks now. I get 90 mpg and have a great time riding with my wife. I have 350 miles on mine going to and from work. I fill the scooter up with the spare change in my pocket and only fill up my Jeep less than every other week.
I have had a few interesting run ins with some people that dont realize that I can legally ride a scooter on the road as long as I obey the same traffic laws that apply to everybody else. I get comments like I should be on the sidewalk and I'm impeding traffic, even though I ride on roads where the speed limit is 35mph and I do 35mph! I guess being behind a scooter is an insult even if I am going 35 in a 25mph zone.
What are the laws concerning scooters in your City/County/State?
With the high cost of gas you are gonna see alot more scooters in your daily travels, you might want one yourself!!Insert witty comment and disclaimer here.

If it has a tag, blinkers, headlight, and brakeligts, mirrors, can do the posted speed limits and the rider is wearing a helmet it is good to go.

Odd, I was looking at them on the internet last night. I have less than a mile to ride to my work and I was thinking about getting one. I know that I would get horribly picked on for it but hey, I would be laughing on the way to the bank in savings.

The only problem I've got with scooters is that most of my 6 mile trip to work is 45mph, and while there is a side drive for bikes and whatnot on the 4 lane part, on the two lane it's just traffic and a rough shoulder. If I could go 45, that would be ok, but as I can't do that on a scooter, it is a no-go. I think I'm going to start pricing motorcycles and motorcycle insurance.

I like mopeds.
I plan on getting one when my truck is paid off.
Anyway, no laws really with mopeds here. Same as traffic laws. Valid DL, registered, and insured.
A couple buddies of mine have mopeds and they pay FORTY dollars a YEAR on insurance. I was like geesh...why not? Considering what you save with gas.No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13

Here, you don't need to be licensed to ride a moped. You can't ride if you are suspended or revoked, just not licensed. Gotta be 16. Must have a helmet and eye protection. Must carry ID. My city requires a "tax" in the form of registration and a city plate. You bring the moped to the PD and we verify the VIN and moped status (pocket rockets and anything more than 50CC's doesn't count.) Then you take the form to the tax office and pay a fee to get the tag. We can run the tag through dispatch and get owner information. It's city only so nothing to do with DMV or state computers.
We get tons of thuglets riding around on them. I'm shocked we don't have more fatalities. I'm in the middle of working a fatality involving a moped rider now and it's the first involving a moped for me.
I have about a 17 minute highway drive to work so a moped would be very bad for me. The fuel savings would be great but it would take 2 or 3 times as long to get to work and not to mention I'd probably get run over on the highway. I am seriously considering a Venture One for my work commute though. That which does not kill me, better start fucking running.

NYS requires a class M license (motorcycle license), legally registered and inspected, and all required equipment for a motorcycle, helmet, blinkers, windshield or shield on helmet or goggles, headlights, etc, etc.

My scooter is a freeway capable, gets 65 mpg, very confortable and has lots of storage. My wife's scooter will run 60 mph get's 80 mpg. You need a MC endorsement but it's worth it.

Sure wish I could have a Venture One right now. I'm looking at the Vespas ( www.vespausa.com/Products/GTS.cfm ) . The scooters I'm looking at would require a motorcycle endorsement on my license, but I can manage that. I would definitely have to leave earlier for work though, 'cause I wouldn't want to go as fast on the scooter as I do in my truck! LOL
I'm certain to catch hell from the guys at work, but like was said earlier, I'll be the one laughing while gas prices are getting higher. The true measure of your character is what you choose to do when you think no one is looking.

Can motorcycles use the HOV lanes everywhere? They can here, and I assume it's a Federal thing. That would be an attraction for me, but I don't like the notion that motorcycles loose to even VW bugs and mini-Coopers in a crash.
