I know that the Police Academy is very physical. Will having braces affect my chances of getting hired by an agency?
Thanks in advance.

I don't see any reason why braces would affect your chances of being hired. When I was in the application process I saw people with braces, and I work with someone who has them. Just be aware that when you're boxing in the academy you'll want to make sure you have the right size mouth guard! lol
You are talking about dental braces, right?
I was wondering the same thing, Mac.
Yes, dental braces.
I was actually a little worried about the boxing and that it would cause my lips to get cut up. I will wear the right size mouth guard. I just wasn't sure if an agency would not hire me to attend an academy due to my braces.
You'd have to confirm that with the agency in question... but generally, all it would be is a requirement for an appropriate mouth guard, so far as I know. Talk to your orthodontist about what sort of mouth guard to get, though, because that's too much money to screw up by going cheap on the mouth guard! He may need to mold one for you.
Boxing? Boy are we behind.
I've completed two basic academies. One of them didn't have any boxing at all, the other one only had one day of boxing. Ground fighting will probably be more of an issue, you'll want to find a partner who doesn't feel the need to make you tap out with every cross-face.
I've never heard of an agency that takes braces into account in their hiring decisions.
Times have changed.....going through the Academy, our defensive tactics consisted of us sitting around watching Bruce Lee movies....hey, learned from the best!!!
We employed ground fighting during our yearly in-service, but command staff had to cut it out, too many people getting hurt. Sure was fun though.........;-)
By boxing, I meant getting hit in the face durng combat training. I've head that most academys use brazilian jiu jitsu for fighting tactics. Is there any truth to this?
Hell, if you're in Louisiana, they give you credit for having teeth!
Nope.
There's no truth to any "most academies" especially in the realm of Defensive Tactics. The best academies look to multiple sources, and do their best to develop a rational, coherent approach that can be taught in the time alloted and retained with minimal refreshers. Many simply "buy into" an off the shelf program like Tony Blauer's SPEAR, Krav Maga Worldwide's Force Training Division's programs. The worst simply do "something" with little rhyme or reason, and no basis in reality...
Hey, hey, HEY!!
What's the old saying? "If you can't dazzle 'em with brillance . . . . "

Sorry about that Cajun....sometimes forget that there are a few good Officers south of I-10. Directing that statement, more or less, toward CreoleCop ( I heard that he lurks here on occasion). He is always ragging me about being so far north in LA that I'm in Canada.
Well, those of us down here in the "deep South" know that anyone north of I-10 ain't nuttin' but a Dayum YANKEE.http://bestsmileys.com/lol/2.gif
