Driving record

Hi,

I just have few questions. I got three moving violation tickets on my driving record. I live in FL and my first ticket was a learner's permit violation- i was driving without a licensed driver beside me and this happened in 2007, then i got another ticket in 2009 for violating a posted sign. And the last one was this past Thursday. I'm a criminal Justice student and want to be a LEO. Can these 3 moving violation tickets affect my job application? My second question is, i am fluent in two other languages- Arabic and French. Do u think this will increase my chance of getting hired?
I have another question that i will post in a new thread concerning the last ticket that i received.

1. No, if you tell the truth about them you should be fine.

2. Yes, your language aptitude is likely to be a bonus, if the feds don't steal you for Arabic.

First off, it would be a good idea to introduce yourself in the introductions forum before initiating any other threads. Second, it all depends on the agencies hiring and what their disqualifications are.

Your driving record won't help you. Cops spend lots of time driving, and your offenses kind of suggest problems playing by the rules. But your language skills are a plus, assuming you are reasonably fluent, not just high school or pidgin phrases.

I would think your tickets are spread out enough you should be ok. Above all, tell the truth in interviews as Maclean said. Everyone makes mistakes, most agencies will work with you, but if you get caught lying then that's it.

Knowing Arabic with a college degree, I would shop those skills around a bit with the feds. Spanish helps you most with local agencies, your two would really only be of value for very large agencies.

Actually -- Arabic, Farsi, and a few others are useful and in demand in my area. Lots and lots of Middle Easterners from various countries... They can't even always talk to each other.

My concern on his record is that he's got 3 tickets over about as many years -- and the most recent was this week. I'm not saying he hasn't got a chance... just that it's going to be a noteable hurdle for him.

They won't be a problem as long as you're honest. The only issue I see is the recent one. You may need a couple years to show you are a good driver. Finish school and get your degree, don't get pulled over anymore, and be honest. If that's the worst issue you have you'll not have any trouble at all.

I agree with Jks. I think that three tickets in three years tells me Adam's head is not in the game. Adam should consider taking a traffic safety class or some kind of advanced driver's Ed. class.

You need to slow down, plain and simple.


It's not like you murdered the paper boy, but if you want it, you need to stop driving like a goofball and take it serious.

Don't forget if it ends up between you and another guy, and you've got 3 speeding tickets and he has none, you may not stand a chance.

I had three speeding tickets from age 16 to 19. Nothing since. I got hired at 27, so there was plenty of distance between myself and my old tickets. Wasn't an issue with my hiring.

And that's the issue... I know plenty of cops who had crappy teen driving records. Shit, I was one of them! But, by the time I got hired, I had a pretty clean record. I still had to explain it all... but years without citations offset the bad.

Would three tickets fairly minor tickets over three years kill an application at the outset? Probably not. Serious charges like reckless or high speeding... different question. A recent reckless (within one to two years, sometimes longer) will likely kill your application without one hell of an explanation. But will it get your application moved down in the stack past a guy with a clean record? Yeah.

It shows a pattern and a lack of respect for the laws. Turn the attitude around and put some time and distance between you and the bad driving and you should be fine. And please don't use the tired excuse that you know a lot of cops with bad driving records, its your life. Some of us NEVER had a ticket.
