    GVWR vs GCWR question

    I have a couple questions. I'm looking (casually-ish) at new pickup trucks. I have seen ratings of around 17,800 pounds. Given the vehicle's GVWR of 9,900, this puts the GCWR at 27,700 pounds according to my math, although the manufacturer GCWR is 24,500.

    Question 1) Are non-commercial vehicles ever subject to the weight ratings governing commercial vehicles?

    Question 2) If yes, is the weight calculated as the actual weight of the trailer, the capacity of the trailer, the combined actual of the vehicle and trailer, or combined maximum of both?

    Question 3) Can local laws be more stringent than the laws governing the normal classes of CDL's? (Live in WI)

    Question 4) Any clue as to how it works in Canada?

    Some one ton trucks do have to get "numbers" on them. Depends what you get and where you live.

    Are you required to get numbered if it is private/not for hire?

    It went by the vehicle weight rating. I've only seen heavy duty one tons and up needing them.

    I can't speak for WI, but in MN if it's a for hire it needs DOT numbers I believe, and is subject to weight restrictions. If it's not for hire and it's not a CMV, it's exempt.
