Still waiting on my LEO Verification, but I figure this topic isn't too touchy to answer before it comes in :P But if anyone wants to msg me on AIM and ask a few "any cop should know questions" feel free. That can hold over until LEF finishes my verification :P (Come on, does anyone know a civillian who knows what an ORI number is?)
Technically we are supposed to wear brown campaign hats. BUT, back in 2000 our department redesigned our badges from a 7 prong star to a 6 prong western style star (the one in my avatar). Well, they've been to cheap to order new hat badges to match the new star. So, no hat badges, no campaign hats. Hell, they didn't get us new flat badges until 2005.
So right now, I wear no hat.
There are tan baseball caps that the boating deputiess wear that some patrol guys use. Technically Uniform Policy states only Boating Deputies can wear them. But none of the Sergeants or the Brass worry about it due to our lack of headwear in 120 Degree heat. I'm still trying to get ahold on one.

It's a bizarre helmet type affair called a custodian helmet.
Here are some pictures of Police constables and sergeants wearing them in the 1960s.

Campaign hat. Although when the Sheriff is not around we don't wear them.

8 point garrison. When our Chief came here about two years ago he made us all buy one but we fought him on wearing them. He finally gave in and didn't make us wear them, but he told us you had better wear them at my funeral, so we wore them at his viewing yesterday and we'll wear them at his funeral today.

I've been places, seen and done things that would make most cry. I've fought along side and against better men then most I come across day to day, i've put my life on the line more then once for things you take for granted and for those you have lost respect for. I don't tell you this for your pity or respect but for you to remember me.

a version of our issued 8 pointer. its called a '50-mission' hat (or crushed hat) that is NOT pointed. rather- the sides are pinned down.
50-mission came from the old-school pilots who's hats became 'crushed' after about 50 flying missions (due to their ear "muffs")

Highway Patrol is a special unit of the Philly PD. They wear leather jackets, motorcycle boots, and "50 mission" caps
