Are you the cyber-elite of your department?
Are you more internet-savvy than most other LEOs in your department?
I'm wondering if the LEOs on this forum are the cyber-elite of their own respective departments. Are you the ones your colleagues ask for advice about computers and the internet? Just curious.

Fuck yes, and it drives me nuts. Internet, I/LEADS, our MDTs, EVERYTHING.
It doesn't help that our city IT guy has an IQ somewhere between half-cooked lasagna and a bean sprout."If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970

Yes, I guess that I sort of am in our unit, but not necessarily the whole sheriff's office. We have one deputy that has been trained in forensics nad that is her full time job for the SO. I do get called upon from others in our unit because I know about certain databases and how to access them. None of them are particularly exotic, in fact many of them are actually open to the general public. Things like looking up the owner of property, finding telephone numbers, finding out who is on probation, finding other pending court dates, etc.

I am sorry but I retired 6 years ago just as the puters were finalized in all our cars. They were great for vehicle and wanted checks but when I left, they were just to the point of receiving calls on them and were starting to set up the report writing on them. I heard lately that they just approved the officers to not only do the report pages but now they can finalize narrative pages all parts and then forward them to there supervisors for approval. I like the idea and could only hope that I could be trained for these parts, the oNLY problem is THAT............... our dept (St Louis PD) does not appropriately train its officers on computers or equipment newly purchased. Unless they changed in the last few years which due to heavy attrition, I seriously doubt it. Hope you officers do help the more simply minded like myself and be patient. Take care and be safe out there ALL !!

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

The other guys always make comments when they see me type :P I can type 80-100 WPM, and most can barely do 30 :P
I was waiting for the computer once and another Deputy was typing a report, doing the famous hunt and peck. I finaly got impatient, had him get up and told him to dictate it to me. Got it done in a fraction of the time it woulda taken him.
Who woulda thought being a nerd would help me be a cop.

Heck yes. I am our department webmaster (which has led to picking up other jobs), and the one that old timers ask when they have computer questions (despite having a computer service division and IT people)

I can usually find what I want when doing an internet search. I deleted internet explorer on my home computer because i figured I didn't need that if I had msn.
Department computer expert laughed all the time while he reinstalled it. But they did find out while I was working fraud and forgery that if they gave me a confiscated computer I could find things the experts couldn't. Seems because I didn't know that I shouldn't be able to do things I could find things they didn't. The Lt in charge of computer crimes would give me a confiscated computer of a pedophile and I could find all the emails and files they had hidden. When I showed him how I got there all he could say was you can't do that.
Sometimes being a computer idiot can work out for the best.
