People have posted about alarms, kill switches, Lojack or OnStar. That's all nice, but your car will still get damaged when they try to get in. That stuff isn't very visible, so it won't make a thief pass your car by in favor of a different one.
The best deterrent against a common thief/joyrider is The Club. Check some of the nicer cars parked in the 'hood. That's what the thieves themselves use.

I use the AutoLock. It locks the brake pedal in place so it can't be used. I used to use The Club until I was told that thieves were cutting people's steering wheels to remove it.
