Part-time jobs?

Hi guys

I will be graduating faily soon from college and have been steadily focusing on a carrer in some type of LE, wether it be federal or local. The only setback is my dad's company. I want to take over when he retires, but I want to do LE as well, more as a matter of fact but my dad wants to keep the business in the family and my older brother isn't really leaning towards that.

My question is, what type of LE jobs are there that do not require you to be on duty in terms of a patrol officer? Any and all types of careers in LE would be appreciated in a reply. I just want to get a general concensus of what kind of jobs are out there that may suit me.

You may look in to being a reserve. There are very few entry-level jobs that do not involve patrol, and most of those are with less "traditional" agencies (probation/parole, etc). Even fewer of those jobs are available as "part time" jobs.

Well, you can't always have your cake, and eat it too, so to speak. Generally speaking, law enforcement is a very time consuming and demanding job. Though not impossible, it would be very difficult to be a full-time law enforcement officer, AND run a business full-time. You are going to have to ask yourself what you want to do more (in case it comes to that).

All new officers at the bottom of the totem pole, start out in patrol, unless you work for a special type of law enforcement agency. It sounds like you may be best suited in a part-time/reserve officer position.

I am a junior, Criminal Justice major, at Sam Houston State University. I have been intrigued by the LE field for as long as I can remember and now that I am closer to getting my degree have tried to further my knowledge about jobs in the LE field.

My scenario is very simple with a little twist that I would like to get some help and or suggestions on. My father owns a business in Houston,TX that he started from scratch and worked his @ss off at to help bring to what it is now. Being about nine years old when he started the business I would like very much to help him keep it in the family, so I have recently had talks with him and my mother about taking over when he decides to retire.

My uncle also is a retired Resident Agent in Charge for the US Customs Service: Office of Investigations and did many years of undercover work. I have talked to him a lot more recently on jobs in LE especially in the FBI and CIA. He has reminded me to state his name and former position on any application regaurding LE.

With all of that being said my main question is what if any jobs can be acquired in the LE field that will in time allow me to own and manage a company? Preferably a part time job but not a desk job. I am starting to think that there is not much hope since most police work consists mainly of office/desk type work that it would be impossible to have a job that all you did was go out and look like the police and detectives on TV.

Notice the line Iam strting to think that there is NOT much hope since most police work consists of mainly office-desk type work...

If you want to be a street cop but not do work,. come and work for my agency- we have some lazy mutherfuggers on my shift, and the admin and supervisors dont say isht about it!

dude i NEVER implied that cops are lazy. In school at a dominant CJ center, they tell us that a cops duty on the street is only 1/3 of their job. We have had plenty of detectives and wardens and even convicts come talk to us about their lives and all of the LE people have forewarned us to not get in over our heads and think we are going to be chasing criminals all day that a lot of it is paper work...even with that said, i NEVER implied, or at least NEVER meant to imply that cops are in any way, shape or form lazy.

Since you're a CJ major and your uncle is a retired federal agent you should have a leg up on knowing that there are many different law enforcement jobs or agencies, federal, state or local. However your asking about two jobs with two different focus. If you want to pursue law enforcement or some other type of criminal justice work you need to think about that. Otherwise, as has been suggested a volunteer or reserve position would be more in line with what you're wanting. It's hard to serve two masters.

I would say that a part-time reserve officer job with a local agency is what your looking. That can be had with either the Police or Sheriff's offices. I don't know of any PT Fed jobs out there.

Second yes alot of our job is paperwork, but most patrol officers do that paperwork (reports) in their vehicles while on the street. The times I was in the office doing paperwork was basically; Arrest reports and booking bad guys into jail, and finishing Felony case files.

Just remeber what Term said, you must decide what you want. and you cant have your Full Time cake and eat it too. Life doesn't work that way.
