Why no metal flashlights, Memphis? :confused:
Ill bet its along the lines of it not being an impact weapon.
This is where the liberal Lawyers have used their infinate wisdom. Its ok to use a metal baton on a person for control tactics (in certain areas of the body). But not a metal flashlight, because thats not what the flashlight was built for, hell makes sence to me.
Yeah I figured it was some legal mumbo jumbo like that. In the academy I attended they made us get special approval for anything they didn't issue, in case we had to use them for an "unintended use" like bashing someone's head in when they're trying to choke you out.
A metal flashlight saved my life one night...i can guarantee, i will never use anything else!!!
Before we got ASP Batons I used a metal flashlight one night on a subjuect that was on Cocaine and feeling no pain. It was the blood runing into his eyes and mouth that made him stop fighting. If I have to Ill use it again.
So no Stingers either? They're metal, although they're pretty small.

They used to have an attachment for your 6-c cell mag lite that would allow you to replace the endcap and 3 batteries with an 18" ASP, efectively turning your flashlight into a 26" baton.
What's wrong with that?
i carry a nice little metal flashlight, its made by INOVA, it a LED T2 Tactical Police Light, with 40 lumen power, it's great for temporarily blinding your attacker. My other fave is the stinger E2D defender with the raised bevelled edge on the front. My agency does not care about what light we carry, unless you had like a 3 foot MAG lite.
I'm not sure, but I think Germantown may require non metal flashlights. The two officers I know with G'town both carry polystingers and SL-20s. Or they could just be escapes from Memphis. I've never asked about it.Quote:

It's amusing that some of the specialzed units like EDU, and I think Metro DUI, and main bike patrol can carry asps. If we could all carry asps, then they'd quit caring about metal flashlights.

I've got a metal stinger on my belt, a full size maglight in the car, and a sap in the right sap pocket. Basically, once we've reached the point where an impact weapon is able to be used, anything goes... lights, clip boards, radios (we've got the old school heavy ones), etc. The only thing that doesn't seem to go over well is hitting someone with the gun... though I've seen a few situations where this has occured justifiably, and with the department's backing. I've never had to go beyond the SAP or the light myself.
