Hats
To the public: What are your thoughts on LEO's wearing uniform hats? Do you think it makes a difference or does it just not matter?
To officers: What are your thoughts on uniform hats?
I personally hate wearing my hat. Luckily, MPD is not that strict on wearing hats, except in certain situations like when the news is around, or your directing traffic. But I feel like it is unneccessary for everyday use.

I go almost no where without a hat on, on or off duty.
My only exceptions are sleeping, showering, funerals, and weddings. ALTHOUGH...only the actual wedding is off limits...I'll wear it to the reception. I even wore my hat at MY wedding reception.
Anyway, yes I wear a hat on duty. It's a navy blue ball cap with "POLICE" in gold lettering across the front. I occasionally wear my 8 point because it looks bad ass (I always say one cop in an 8 pt is the equivalent of five cops not in 8 pts). The biggest reason I don't wear it is because it's an expensive hat, and if it gets damaged I'll have to replace it. That, and I can't wear it in the car because I can't put my head on the headrest, and I constantly forget to put it on when I get out of the car for calls. No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13

A traffic ticket is only valid if the LEO was wearing a hat while writing it, right?

Don't wear one, never could get used to them. We have a very liberal policy about the hats.
When I went to the academy many moons ago, they really stressed the importance of wearing a hat and how it showed that you are an authority figure.Job security...

My own Chief makes that remark if he catches us without our tie when it's over 32 in longsleeve uniforms. He swears by it.
As for hats, we're not requires to wear it except for formal occasions such as funerals, and our festival. We have the round top, ice cream man style hats. I hate them. The only cover I wear if needed is a black cold weather beanie when I'm going to be out of the car for a long time.
I would probably wear a uniform hat if we had the Trooper/Drill Sgt. style hats. Those are definitely bad ass."Like" us on facebook! https://www.facebook.com/pages/Offic...93147194083228

What are you supposed to do with the hat if you suddenly have to chase someone on foot?

I've always like the trooper hats, not so much the ball caps. I think I'd rather see no hat then ball cap.

Dress uniforms are for parades. Hats are to keep warm or keep water off your head.

I have only worn a uniform dress hat to funerals. I have a custom ball cap I had made at teamlogo.com. I rarely wear it though....

Also very useful for knocking out dogs about to try to bite you as well as the local idiot getting in your face - ours have the bollard on the top and they come very keen when applied with force - the technique is colloquially known as titting someone when the helmet is used in the offensive mode!
Having said that, I haven't had one of those now for 10 years or so, I prefer my U boat commander cap - white topped of course!A common mistake made when trying to come up with a totally foolproof design is to completely underestimate the innate ingenuity of fools.

It doesn't make a difference to me, although I think that hats would be appropriate during formal occasions.

We wear baseball caps at my department. I wear mine every day. Just a personal preference. The sheriff's deputies and State Troopers in my area all wear cowboy hats. The deputies don't always have theirs on but you will never see a Trooper without his on.

i equate them to a poker player wearing sunglasses, there is definitely an intimidation factor with either the campaign cover or the 8 point depending on how they are worn
