Navy Seal will publish book with firsthand account of raid that killed bin Laden

A book company said Wednesday that it will release on September 11 a firsthand account of the raid that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
U.S. Special Operations Command has not reviewed the book or approved it, the official said. Officials only recently became aware the former SEAL was writing a book but were told it encompasses more than just the raid and includes vignettes from training and other missions. They would like to see a copy, the official said, to make sure no classified information is released or the book contains any information that might out one of the team members.

    Update:

[QUOTE]The book's publisher said the special operations forces team member did not want to reveal his name to protect himself and his family.
But only a day after the New York Times first reported the book was coming out, Fox News reported the author's real name on its website and posted photos of him in combat gear.
Later Thursday, the Associated Press also revealed Owen's real name.[/QUOTE

    Update:

The Pentagon general counsel threatened legal action Thursday against a former Navy SEAL who wrote a revealing book about last year's Osama bin Laden raid, warning him he has violated secrecy agreements and broken federal law.

Mixed emotions here. I pre-ordered the book but I think he should have kept his mouth shut if he agreed to.

I've been reading it. So far, nothing earth shattering.

I finished the book and have to say it was a great read. There's nothing in it that was sensitive. I probably could have guessed at the tactics and methods in the book just based upon what's known. He did a good job of sourcing all the information with public sources too.

What I found valuable was the first person perspective of such a historical event. You really get a sense of the blood and sweat that goes into an operation like this. And not just at the operator level. It wasn't "Look at us SEALs we're badasses!" He talked about all the work on the intel level to brief them and prepare them, as well as the phenomenal piloting skills that took place to get them there and back. The helicopter crash we heard about happened during the insertion and the pilot was able to "control" the crash enough that all the operators safely deployed. It would have been a messy op if some had been injured and killed on the way in.

Anyway, great book. It's worth the read and you won't be discovering any state secrets.
