Decisions...descisions.

So I've come to the conclusions that I want to get an AR to carry in my unit. After all in today's times, you never know when the extra firepower will be needed. I'm debating between a Bushmaster and a Colt. Deffinately want the 16in barrel and retractable stock. What I'm having difficulty deciding on is what optic to get and what light for the accessory rail. I'm thinking about the EOTech holographic sight. Any suggestions, pro/cons and anything of that nature would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

In my opinion the Eotech 557 is a very good optic for LEO.

I run a Colt with an EOTech and will never sway.

It's fast, accurate, and easy to use. During training classes I could outpace other exceptional shooters using different optics.

I don't use a rail, I run a Surefire 500A for a light. 225 lumens and it becomes part of the rifle.

How much does the surefire run?

I've got the Eotech 552 so it runs on AA batteries. I have it mounted with a Dominator mount so you have a perfect co-witness when using iron sights. I would prefer the colt, but I own a mutt.

I run an EOTech 511 on my Rock River...Never had a problem with the optic. However (and I think Maclean would probably know a little better), there is apparently a gov't/LE model of EOTech and a civvy version. I think the difference is on the civvy model, it automatically shuts off at 20 minutes so you don't leave it on and drain the battery. I think the LE model stays on until you shut it off. I've always wondered what I would do if we had a swat callout and I ended up on the emergency assault team on the corner of the building for hours and hours and needed to make immediate entry to the house and my EOTech had shut off.

FYI, I settled on the 511 because we don't have nightvision so I didn't need a NV capable unit.

I guess the biggest problem I have with a colt, awesome gun no doubt, is that I feel that im paying more for the name. Am I wrong for feeling like this, or is the colt REALLY better than bushmaster?

There's a site i recently started checking out - m4carbine.net - that has got a chart which shows the differences between the brands (super technical stuff, like proper staking of the carrier keys, "F" height front sight base, etc). They have Colt at the top of their list and Bushmaster near the bottom. Kind of wish I would've seen this before I went with RRA, but the mods necessary are ones that I can get done.

I own a Colt LE6920 with an Eotech sight on it with back up ironsights. the best of both worlds I think. I'm a cheap bastard so I put an adapter on the forarm so it would mount my M3 pistol light on it. It works great for close work and at long ranges (over 100 yrds) a weapon mounted light wouldn't do much anyways.

You aren't just paying for the name.

You can get a Colt on LE purchase for the same price as the other stuff.

I just picked up another one for less than the cost I see Bushmasters going for.

To answer your earlier question, you can expect to pay at least $450 for a new Surefire 500A, but if you send me a PM I can put you in touch with my guy.

He has used 6721's, new 6920's, and some used 500As.

The Surefire 500A or 900 series will identify a target at 100 yards. In pitch black.

In closer, it is an excellent way to set shit on fire.

EoTechs are excellent. The only shortcoming I have ever experienced with mine was when I jumped out of an air conditioned squad car and it fogged up on me. I considered that a user error. It is an excellent tool for both close and mid range targets.

I'd consider that a warranty issue, if it was a Government model. They are anti-fog coated and warranted fog proof.

well, its done. I went out and bought an AR today. I didnt get a colt or a bushmaster. I did a little more research yesterday and came across Armalite. I called a local sporting goods store and found out that they had 1 Armalite in stock. It has a 14.5" barrel and a flattop receiver with a detachable carry handle. Here are a couple of pics.

Just curious.. Does your dept, or anybody else to that matter have policies regarding patrol rifles? Inspections, qualifications, specifications and such before you can mount in your patrol car for duty?

Not literally but were not even able to fart in our car without a policy.

Our policy sets some loose standards and requires an inspection by the FTU for rifles.

.223/5.56, STANAG magazines, twist suitable to stabilize a 60 grain bullet, optic optional, light and sling required.

As far I can tell from looking at the policies and procedures the only "long Rifle" that the department will isue me is a shotgun. If I want a AR or Mini 14 it is up to me to purchase one. From there I must qualify with it (Piece of cake) and I am not allowed to have a hell fire option or full auto option unless I am on SWAT.

You dont have to get a tax stamp for a 14 inch barrel if you purchase it on your own? Or since you are LEO and will be using it for patrol you dont need one? (I dont know).
