Civilian Marksmanship Program
Has anyone ordered any rifles from the CMP?
CMP Home
Specifically, I'm looking at purchasing both a serivceable M1 Garand, and an M1903 Springfield. I'm pretty partial to both. They have serviceable (meaning OK to be fired) rifles in both models to be had for anywhere from $500 to $2500 dollars. I would of course purchase closer to the lower range.
They don't need to be pretty, they just need to shoot!
It doesn't appear that they need to be shipped to an FFL because they are gov't surplus to be sold directly to civilians. I read over the eligibility requirements...me LE capacity serves as proof of marksmanship, and my FOP membership serves as an eligible "club." I think I read somewhere that just being currently employed as a cop satisfies the club requirement too.
Someone recommended them to me a few years back for a rifle purchase, but I didn't go through with it at the time. Anyone here have any experience with them?"If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970

An old dispatcher of mine got one through the CMP and he loves his Garand. I want to get one also. I just need to get off my lazy ass and do it. They are sweet shooters. Every once in a while they will have M1 Carbines also.

Got a nice M-1 1954 vintage Garand for $595 and a new in wrap Army surplus Kimber 82 22 lr target rifle for $600, thru CMP last year. It took about 45 days start to finish. Be very careful (errors) with the paperwork. Send your packet of paper by 'certified' mail.
I would also suggest you do so soon. I think elimination of the CMP is hidden somewhere in the "change" promised from the "transparent" Obama administration. Clinton tried it, and lot of good stuff got destroyed before the Congress stopped him. Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. I have heard of people going to their outlet and picking their own weapon.

I have a friend that has ordered three of them. I don't remember which grade he got, but I've shot one of them. It is a sweet shooter.
He's trying to collect all the brands - He has one Singer, a Springfield, and an International Harvester. I can't remember which one he let me shoot.
Just pay attention to their grading system.

I have service grade on each. The Garand is a beaut, the carbine is much more rough for a service grade.

While the Garand stock is much better, they were both well worth the wait."I'd rather hunt with VP Cheney than ride with Ted Kennedy ."
