Tight grouping..
This particular station of qualifications starts at interview distance. At the command, officer draws and fires 3 rounds from hips, then begins moving backwards, firing three rounds center mass to center target (the one that got the hip shots), then 3 rounds center mass to a target to the left of this target and then one to the right of this target. The group that is being pointed to is immediately after my hip shoot, I'm walking backwards and shooting just about as fast as I can. I wasn't on a timer, but I'd say these three shots came off in easily under 1 second.

Not bad at all. I'm surprised to see hip shooting still being used in a qual.

Nice shooting. That round is by far my favorite of the state's qualification course.

Good stuff.
Mac, we still use hip shooting in our qual, and we train extensively on it. Do you consider that good or bad? We call it "close quarter".

We have a couple of 5 round stages from the hip in our off duty course of fire, but none in our duty qualification.
I'll admit I'm not quite as good with my autos as I am with my old wheelguns when it comes to firing from the hip. They just seem to point better for me.Blessed are the the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. MATT 5:10

The first course of fire in the Colorado POST qual starts at the one yard line, with the shooter in front of the left target position. From a standing holstered position, upon the appearance of a threat, the shooters will draw and fire two rounds close combat, then while taking two steps backward fire two rounds center mass, then one round to the head.

The concept behind the close quarter drill is that if you're that close to the bad guy, you don't want to be extending your weapon out to where he can reach it. In close quarter, you're keeping the weapon tucked in close to your body where he can't get his hands on it.
In that position you obviously aren't using aimed fire, but instinctive or point shooting. With a little practice you can get pretty good at hitting your target, even at longer distances.
But I reckon y'all already know that.
I surprise myself at how accurate I can get even out to 12-15 yards and beyond, without using my sights. The key word is "PRACTICE".

I'm sight biased.
There is a place for "hip shooting," but it is limited.
I'd train for it, but not include it on a qualification.
I don't routinely stand one yard from someone, and there is no speed advantage at any greater distance.
If I see someone point shooting beyond 3, we are not performing as trained.I'm your huckleberry...

I would agree with you on that. We only do it from the 1 yard line. And while I agree that we should aime never to be that close, I do appreciate the fact that there are some lethal encounters that will occur in the Inside Position, and there won't be room or space to disengage and gain a sight picture.
I absolutely agree though...anything beyond the 1 isn't really tactically sound.

We taught hip shooting for our Protection teams. It involved a fend off with the week hand, a draw and a half turn (gun away from threat) with double tap. We taught it at 3 yards ( to give confidence in technique ) but qualified at 1 yard on a 2 second exposure.

We still have hip shooting on our quals but we have to use a Fed qualification that has it on it.
