The Deli Tour: Manhattan Deli, cont'd
This was a great place for the best deli sandwiches in Des Moines. Manhattan Deli is celebrating 30 years of serving quality food. This has to be one of the only delis in the area that cooks it's own meats. The beef and turkey are marinated and cooked to perfection. Fred offered me samples of the eye of round and the turkey breast. They were perfectly seasoned, moist and tender. Fred even offered a taste of their grinder meat. This was some of the best I have ever tasted. For those who do not know, grinders are a Italian sausage/ground beef mixture with extra seasonings. The Manhattan Deli sells over 100 grinder sandwiches every Thursday!
Fred said there are many sandwiches that are not on the menu yet. He has many books on deli sandwiches.

I will definitely stop back for another Zach Johnson at the end of The Deli Tour!
The Deli Tour: Palmer's Deli
Palmer's Deli Market — Central Iowa's best deli
This is one place I said I would not visit. They have brownies that have the crumb of cake and not much of a selection of meats. With five locations, I think they lost the "hometown feel".

This was a very spacious dining room with open ceilings which translates to a very noisy room.
A chalkboard menu that was easy to read with not much imagination and limited deli meats.

The sandwich I selected was the #17 Sub Ham, salami, cheddar & Swiss cheeses, lettuce, tomato, and red onion on a ciabatta hoagie. This was a very good sandwich. The ciabatta was a perfect match.

We also tried a few of their salads. They were ok.

Glatt
Glatt means "smooth" in German and Yiddish. In the context of kosher meat, it refers to the smoothness, or lack of blemish, in the internal organs of the animal. In the case of a scab or lesion on a cow’s lungs specifically, there is debate between Ashkenazic customs and Sephardic customs. Ashkenazic Jews hold that if the patch can be removed and the lungs are still airtight (a process that is tested by filling the lungs with air and then submerging them in water and looking for escaping air) then the animal is still kosher, while Sephardic Jews hold that if there is any sort of scabbing or lesion on the lungs, then the animal is not kosher. “Glatt” meat would literally mean that the animal has passed the stringent Sephardic requirements, although today the word is rarely used in that context.[citation needed]

On to the award winning tenderloins!
The original. This is a very meaty tenderized pork center loin. The breading to meat ratio was perfect. I chose the Goldie fries. These are a battered steak style fry.
