L.Cs' BBQ
L C's Bar-B-Q - Kansas City, MO

Their smoker was custom made.

Note the "LC" on the smoker door.

This was highly recommended for their burnt ends. I tried the burnt ends and half chicken with red beans and rice and baked beans.

The burnt ends were ok. The chicken was good. The beans were decent and had bits of meat.
The red beans and rice had me curious because I had not seen it offered in other bbq joints in the area. I regret making this choice. This was quite possibly the worst thing I have ever tried to eat. Flavorless gravy with way overcooked mushy rice. Oh, and some red beans.

The restaurant was clean. There was a couple of people sitting at a corner table that looked like they had unpacked their belongings on the table.
This was a definite fail.To Live Is To Eat

And everything in between! There is so much history here, I learn something new every time I drop in.

Michael Leahy worked at Kelly's from 1968-1977. He was a dear friend of the Kelly's and also the executive director of Welcome House, a halfway house for recovering alcoholics.
When Leahy passed away in 2002, Welcome House had his golf shoes bronzed as a tribute to Kelly's for their support of the House. When asked later in life what helped him Leahy replied, "First, my friends, especially the Kelly family, were always there for me, believed in me and never gave up on me. Second, I knew that when I died, I wanted others to remember me as a good person- someone who made a difference."
Leahy's legacy lives on in the countless number of people he helped.
Thomas Hart Benton's Persephone.
Only ten prints were produced. This one in Kelly's and the other nine are locked away in a bank.Benton declared proudly that his art was better suited to America's bars than to its museums.

I noticed one of the tv's was broadcasting the rooftop bar.

There was one lone drunk stumbling about.

"Red" wrapping up a few jell-o shots.

Kelly's Westport Inn is a historical gem. What really makes the experience is the people. Pat, Mitch and Colleen Kelly were on hand to pour drinks and have great conversation with. A few regulars were on hand to add to the experience. When you stop at Kelly's, you are never a stranger. To Live Is To Eat

You could have a regular side of fries or go large with a choice of dipping sauces.

Or you could go with their trio of ketchup based sauces.

The sandwich was a high octane version of a french dip.The piccalilli was a bit tart for my taste.
I had stopped by the day before and had a few beers. When I returned, the manager and the server addressed me by first name. I felt like the red carpet had been laid out just for me. This is made for a well rounded experience. I will return to The Beer Kitchen. To Live Is To Eat

Kitty's Cafe
Kitty's Cafe - Kansas City, MO

I arrived early. The guy at the counter, George, was from Des Moines so we talked for a bit before I ordered. This is the smallest restaurant I have ever been in. About eight bar stools and a small counter.

I ordered the pork loin sandwich. With a soda it was only $6!

Three tempura style breaded pork loin cutlets that were pounded out thin as a dime. The hot sauce was a nice touch.

This was a delicious sandwich. As I finished, the restaurant filled up and then the entire local fire dept showed up for lunch! I squeezed my way out of there! To Live Is To Eat

These were delicious! Not as hot as I expected. Great flavor with good heat. These were dusted with tapioca flour, fried and then sauced. A nice lite crunch with a nutty spicy sauce. yummm...
