No more Twinkies or Ding Dongs?

IRVING, Texas — Hostess, the maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread, is going out of business.

The Irving, Texas based company today asked a court's permission to close down a week after its bakers union went on strike.

Bakery operations have been suspended at all plants. Most of its 18,500 workers will be laid off and the company will try to sell its assets. Hostess has 33 bakeries and 565 distribution centers. The company has issued layoff notices to 390 North Jersey workers, according to a report on NorthJersey.com. Hostess told 320 workers at its Wayne bakery and 70 at its outlet store in Carlstadt that the layoffs will take effect July 3, the report said.

Hostess closed three of its 36 plants permanently Monday, blaming the strike, and about 13 plants operated "unsustainably" this week because of worker shortages, Chief Executive Officer Gregory Rayburn said Thursday. The bakers union has "made no demands, and in fact they stopped returning our calls about a month ago," he said.

I'm not anti-union in general (hell, I belong to one, although the FOP is not techinically a union in that we can't strike), but I am anti-bully. Hell, even the Teamsters were like, "Uhh, they're not bluffing dude. Back off."

My store's Hostess display was annihilated. Many people were standing near the empty shelves on their cell phones sobbing.

My guess is that they will. Twinkies and Wonder Bread are iconic, if Hostess really does shut down they'll be able to pretty much name their price for those items.

One of the strikers the news interviewed said he believed another company will make the products & all the workers will get jobs at those companies. How naive. This was a gamble & the strikers lost.
