    Rant: "I am a Chef!"

While out and about yesterday I decided to swerve in to a local craft brewery for a cold two or three. The service is always great and some of the owners are there chatting with the patrons.
One of the bartenders is very interactive. He was talking about how he is a Chef and that he traveled Europe working in restaurants. One of the points he was making was the cleanliness of their kitchens and how they totally disregard food safety. What piqued my interest was that he claimed he was a Chef. I asked if he was Home certified. He responded, "No, I took the ServSafeŽ Food Handler, Manager and Responsible Alcohol Training - ServSafeŽ course." Ah, so he took a food safety course and claims to have traveled. Yup, that's a Chef. Same goes for anyone who claims to be a "foodie". All I see is trendy pretentious people. The times that I have encountered groups of people saying, "Hey, we are foodies!" It ends up being a conversation about restaurants. :ugh:

The one thing I know about food and restaurants is NOT to look in a Chinese restaurant kitchen.

Ugh. That is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Over the last several years, food and cooking have become entertainment. The positive aspect of that is that more people have been exposed to different foods, which I think is great. The negative aspect is that some people who simply like to cook have been deciding that they can be called "chef." While it's definitely possible to earn that title without getting ACF certification or even having formal culinary training (there are many well known and unknown chefs who have earned the right to be called "chef" by working in restaurants for years to learn and coming up through the ranks), too many people who may simply be good home cooks are taking themselves far too seriously and referring to themselves as "chefs."

It's kind of like security guards referring to themselves as police officers.

As for the word "foodie," I'd like to find and slap the person who came up with that word.

I think IMGreat came up with the term.
