(HNP) Virtra Systems Immersive Reality Training is “As Real As It Gets”

Five-screen and surround sound of System 300 delivers training developed from real situations.
I was by myself, walking along the top deck of the parking garage when a guy appeared from behind a car with a tire iron in his hand. After being told to drop the tire iron and produce some ID, he raised his arm and began to argue.
Two more guys appeared to my right, coming from behind the same car, and one of them began to make threatening gestures. That was about the time the tire iron guy looked to his right and said something...I still can't recall exactly what because things were getting out of hand. That was when the guy coming up the stairs behind me pulled out his gun and shot me. When I felt the shock of getting hit I managed to get off three rounds, and the last one hit him, but that didn't ease my shock at getting hit...

Then I was glad that the whole thing was just another heart-pounding scenario from Virtra. I had been standing in the middle of a five-screen, 300-degree virtual world of punks, gangbangers, addicts, sociopaths and honest citizens that make up the cop's working life. The scenarios are lifelike, complete with aggression, fear, panic, good and bad decisions. While I was "on patrol" I wore a belt-mounted receiver that gave me an electric shock if the bad guy shot me.
After the scenario's conclusion, the trainers went over my mistakes. I hadn't maintained full awareness of my situation, and had failed to position myself to cover the stairway I had just walked up. I had learned a lot, and unlike those hard, sometimes fatal lessons of real life, I was able to profit from my mistakes. I went back into the training arena.
Even more than the first time, within a few seconds it became real. My heart rate went up, my respiration increased, and a trickle of sweat ran down my chest as my partner's interaction with one of the local addicts seemed ready to get violent, just as three guys came into the alley with their hands in their pockets....
The Virtra scenarios are created, scripted and filmed by sworn law officers, guys who've been there and done that, a thousand times. The stories you see on the screens have multiple endings and vary according to what you, the officer, do as the situation develops. You can get killed, as I was, or you can make a good collar and survive. Either way, you learn something, and there's no blood.

With a sound system that literally shakes the floor, speakers behind each screen, and a pistol that has enough recoil to make the second shot a challenge, the action on the screens couldn't be more realistic. This is virtual training taken to its state-of-the-art maximum, and ought to be in every agency's training program. The five-screen system 300 will fit in a room just 20 feet across, and when you're not training, the gear stows away and the room is available for other uses.

That looks like a nice system, I think the cost of it would put it out of reach for most departments. Especially in this time of budget cuts.

It looks like a great idea. I wonder about integrating cover and concealment and movement?

I shot a demo scenario at the SHOT show a few weeks ago and I can attest. Grade A BAD ASS.

I want to say it was pricey. Like 100K+. Maybe even 150K. But I might be wrong.

Pretty cool. Looks like FATS on steroids. I'd love to do a few scenarios in there. I don't think it would be cost effective for my department though, since we already have FATS and simunition.
