Kel-Tec CNC Industries, Inc., has a well-deserved reputation for innovative and affordable firearms, from pistols to rifles (with a new shotgun that will amaze everyone, but that's a story for later).
Their latest entry (it was introduced to the market in late 2006) into the concealable personal protection line is the PR-9, a 9mm sub-compact pistol that weighs in at just 18.2 ounces, with a full 7-round magazine and one in the chamber.
It's a small handful, just 5.85 inches long, 4.3" high, and at .88 inches wide, this is a pistol that will tuck into waistband or ankle holster with barely a bulge.
The locked-breech action is adapted from Kel-Tec's well-proven and highly successful P-11 and P-3AT pistols. The frame is machined from a solid aluminum billet, and carries the trigger group. The slide and barrel are made from hardened AISA 4140 steel and it is designed with a hammer block safety.

The trigger has a comparatively long, five-pound pull, and is double action only. The slide locks back on the last round and the magazine release is thumb-operated (for right-hand shooters), located right where it ought to be, behind the trigger guard. John Browning would approve.
Field stripping requires nothing more than a cartridge case and is quick and easy.
The rear sight is adjustable for windage with the supplied allen wrench and shims (not included in the basic pistol package) can adjust for elevation. The seven-round, single-stack magazine has numbered holes and the "pinkie-grip" magazine extender adds a tenth of an inch to the height.
Get it with your choice of blued, parkerized or hard chrome finish on the metal parts, with the grips available in black, grey and olive drab. The best news is the price, with an MSRP of just $333 for the blued, $377 for the parkerized and $390 for the hard chrome version.
