(HNP) Ruger Introduces All American-Made SR 1911 Pistol

For this, the centenary year of John Browning's brilliantly designed 1911 Government Model, there have been a number of 1911s introduced to the market. When Sturm, Ruger & Company announced their entry, made of stainless steel and bead-blasted to a finish that almost glows, the news was electric.

Every part, every spring, screw and piece of steel, is made and assembled in the USA. The stainless barrel and its bushing are machined from the same piece of ordnance-grade stainless steel barstock, for a silky smooth fit and accuracy that was only a dream back in 1911.

"We are very proud to offer a 1911 pistol, an icon of American gun design and manufacturing," said Ruger CEO Michael Fifer recently. "In this 100-anniversary year of the introduction of the Government Model 1911 it is only fitting that such a firearm be completely manufactured in American with all American-made components."

The Ruger SR1911 has the nice touches of a custom-grade 1911, with a skeletonized hammer and skeletonized aluminum trigger, oversized beavertail grip and extended thumb safety. The heavy firing pin spring, coupled with the titanium firing pin, negates the need for a firing pin block and offers an updated safety feature to the original "Series 70" design. Don't worry, the trigger-pull is still like Goldilock's porridge, "just right."

The internal extractor is much improved from Mr. Browning's original, and no worries about it "shooting loose" since the plunger tube for the slide stop and the thumb safety are integral to the frame. Set the adjustable trigger-stop to a hair past "bang," put your hand around the checkered hardwood grips, set the Novak 3-dot sights on the x-ring and it could be the start of a great day at the range.

The SR1911 comes with two stainless magazine, a seven- and an eight-shot version. The extra round could be a friend in need, and it doesn't seriously alter the good looks at all. Ruger has an MSRP of $799 for this gem of 1911, all stainless steel and all-American.

I will admit that it is a good looking gun. But, as a combat weapon, I'll need a little more info on the construction before I would give it a shot.

As a 1911 addict, I have seen a multitude of "the finest" marketing advertisements come and go. I have had Wilson, Baer, Springfield Armory, Colt, Kimber all fail during MY testing. Marketing hype such as barrel/bushing made from a single barstock means nothing to me. Any good fitted bushing to barrel will accomplish the same. A properly staked plunger tube will not "shoot loose". If your afraid yours will, just make sure your grip panel extends up over it to hold it in place. Which most already do.

All this said, for the price it could be a good basic 1911. Its how the individual parts are fitted that counts.
