Sounds like the sound the TV screen (tube type) makes when it's on but there's no picture. Irritating as all hell. And yes, I'm over 30.

Kids are using that as a ringtone when they don't want the adults (teachers, etc) to hear it.

In Ottawa, We just put our phones on vibrate.

I read a thread on another board (Anandtech I think) about these tones and it turned out the computer speakers and soundcard made quite a difference. It was a different sample file in that case, a sweep from 20hz to 20khz and people were hearing harmonics due to their equipment. Ok, I'll stop being boring...for little while.

I can only hear it out of my left ear. I guess my right ear is older than my left.

I'm the opposite - having done tried several versions of this and flipping the headphones around to verify, I've found my left ear falls off about 2khz sooner than the right. I thought I was weird, but luckily it turns out to be fairly common.
