How many Michaels do you know?
I’m wondering if the fact that St. Michael is the patron saint of law enforcement has caused people named Michael to be disproportionately represented among LEOs.
How many LEOs named Michael do you know? How many non-LEOs named Michael do you know? Among the people you know, do the LEOs named Michael outnumber the non-LEOs named Michael?
For the purposes of this poll, a LEO is defined as anyone who would be able to qualify as a verified LEO on this forum (including retired LEOs). "People that you know" is defined as people that you are currently in touch with (not counting old classmates and teachers, for instance, unless you're still in touch with them). Anyone with "Michael", "Mike", "Miguel," or any other version of "Michael" as a given name, surname, middle name, or nickname counts as someone "named Michael."
I can think of at least three reasons Michaels might be disproportionately represented among LEOs:
1. Parents who consider law enforcement an admirable career path are more likely to admire St. Michael and name their children after him, and then encourage their children to become LEOs;
2. People named Michael are more likely to feel a special bond with St. Michael and the values he represents, and choose to become LEOs as a result.
3. St. Michael uses supernatural means to encourage people named after him become LEOs.
Do any of these apply for any Michaels that you know?Last edited by Jenna; 12-05-06 at 03:16 PM.

I'd say a lot of this depends on who people hang out with on a daily basis, but you know that I'm sure.
I only know one cop personally named Michael. But I only know about 30 cops personally so that's probably average for that number of people.

I know atleast 4 Michaels....2 are in no way LEO's. 1 (my brother) went to school for law enforcement but became a business inspector instead. And 1 is in school and plans to be a LEO after he graduates.

The Department I work for has about 20 Michaels out of 220 employees. The last shift I was on had 4 out of 11 officers.

I work with one Michael who is a hell of a cop. On the other hand I work with three Andrew's.
The statements and opinions made here are of Copper51's only. They do not reflect my department or the city I work for.
So lay off, I'm offduty and spouting off.

Jenna, you are definately the intellectual of the bunch here. My head hurts from reading this. I know at least 4 Mikes on the job though, and can't at the moment think of any from outside of police work... So, maybe you are on to something. Of course, I spend most of my time outside of work up in the mountains or on here, so maybe I just don't know anyone else?

One.
"Somewhere a True Believer is training to kill you.
He is training with minimum food or water, in austere conditions, day and night.
The only thing clean on him is his weapon.
He doesn't worry about what workout to do---his rucksack weighs what it weighs, and he runs until the enemy stops chasing him.
The True Believer doesn't care "how hard it is"; he knows he either wins or he dies.
He doesn't go home at 1700; he is home.
He knows only the Cause.
Now, who wants to quit?"
"I am only one, but I am one. I can not do everything, but I can do something. And because I can not do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. What I can do I should do. And what I should do, by the Grace of God, I will do."
