What event is locked in your mind?
What shocking, national/world/personal event happened, that is locked in your mind so tight, that you can remember exactly when it happened and where you were at the time it occurred?

September 11, 2001 - the only time I cried more was when my father passed.

I have top two events. The first would have to be 9/11........when all the ciaos began I was in my office and people were running down the halls to the Emergency Room's waiting room to see the TVs. People seemed to be in shock because no one knew what was going on. Meanwhile my Father was in the air at the exact same time. Terrible terrible day for everyone.
My second event that sets in my memory is 6AM on December 9, 1980. I was getting ready for school when the announcer on the radio said that last night (Dec. 8th) someone shot and killed John Lennon. I sat on the top step of the stairs and cried. My Mom heard me and came to see what was the matter and when I told her she sat next to me and we both cried.

9/11/01 is undoubtedly locked in everyone's mind who saw the planes swallowed up by the twin towers and watched on TV the ensuing inferno, billowing smoke and soot covered people running to escape from it.
I also remember exactly when and where I was when the hospital called and told me my wife had stopped breathing and to get down there immediately.
I also remember exactly when and where I was when a gang of hoodlums beat and stomped the Hell out of me, when I foolishly walked into the worst dive in the county alone and without a partner, looking for a suspect.

Well, I have 2 as well. Sept. 11. I woke up right after the first plane hit and turned on the news... (I never turn on the news.) I was thinking that it was impossible for an airline pilot to screw the pooch that badly and then I saw the second plane come in and hit and I knew something was wrong.
The second was The Challenger Incident. We were out of school for a snow day. My mom was babysitting for a friend from church and we were sitting in one of the bedrooms playing Monopoly and watching the shuttle launch. Out of nowhere it explodes as it's rising into the sky... I was stunned."Where's your towel Arthur?" -Ford Prefect
"You! On your knees!" -Green Jello
Some take delight in the carriages a rollin'
and some take delight in the hurley and the bowlin',
I take delight in the juice of the barley,
and courtin' pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early...
"You are, without a doubt, the worst pirate I've ever heard of..." Cmdre. Norrington "Ah, but you have heard of me." Capt. Jack Sparrow
Warning my statements do not reflect the policies, procedures or views of my agency. As a matter of fact, they think I'm just as nuts as you do, so shove it and blow it out of your fart tube.

Challenger go with throttle up.
Roger, go with *garble*
Two minutes of silence and long lens shots.
That's a moment I won't forget in this lifetime.
Reagan getting shot sticks in my mind. Listening to those ABC radio reports about the President being shot in the midst of the cold war was some ice water up the veins stuff for a kid in the 80s.

September 11-I was at home and had the flu and was watching tv and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
The death of my dad when I was 18. I was in Florida on vacation and decided to visit my dad because I hadn't seen him in years. I talked to him on the phone at the airport and got cut off. That was the last time I ever talked to him because he died days later before I had a chance to see him. Bummer.
The murder of an officer in our county. The first time an officer had been killed in our area in recent memory. It made me start paying attention to the police and then I got involved in supporting them and I've been keeping an eye on them ever since.Last edited by cwtlady; 12-28-06 at 08:09 AM.

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.

Without a doubt 9/11 will always stand out. My daughter was in the hospital and I was sitting with her watching the news.
The 2nd would have to be the Challenger explosion. I was on day shift and had just left the station when I heard something on the news on our then AM stations in our cruisers. I was home in 2 minutes and I was able to sit for an hour or so watching the news before I was called on the radio.

Well mine are a mix of good and bad times...
9/11 of course.
When my nephew was born.
The Columbia.
When Steve Irwin was killed.
The first time I heard one of the officers I work with call out a distress call on the radio.
When I got accepted to college.Last edited by Autumn2009; 12-28-06 at 03:59 PM.
There’s a promise I need you to make
While I’m gone you take care of the love
And I’ll deal with the hate.
Don’t worry about me; I’ll be all right
Just care for your children and sleep tight
I’ll keep you safe on my watch tonight

JFKs assasination. I was in third grade, Mrs. Emmerich's class, when the only other teacher in the school, Mrs. Hope, came in and told us the President had been shot, and that the buses were on the way to take us home early.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

Desert Storm...I remember someone from the Army coming to talk to my 1st grade class about it.
The Oklahoma City bombing...I remember coming home from school and seeing it all over the news.
The Olympic bombing in Atlanta...I had just gotten out of 6th grade.
Columbine...I was in high school and we watched it on tv all day.
Of course, 9/11...watched it all day long at school.
The Columbia space shuttle...I was watching the Today show with my mom and ended up seeing this instead.

The "official" car pulling into my driveway and the Army Chaplain getting out. "Your son was killed in Iraq when his helicopter went down" will forever stay with me.
