Who was the best and most famous LEO?
IMO, it was J. Edgar Hoover, founder and director of the FBI, who served in federal law enforcement for 48 years under 8 presidents.
He took a small corrupt agency and built it into the the largest and most powerful investigative agency in the world.
He was a hated and feared name, from the petty thief to professional gangsters during the Roaring 20's and 30's, who rooted out organized crime and gangsterism and brought lawlessness to it's knees.
After his death in 1972 left wing critics accused him of practically everything in the book, from being a homosexual to committing high crimes and misdemeanors, none of which were proven true.

OK, OK... I vote for Buford Pusser too. That makes J. Edgar Hoover the next best LEO. That is of course if we don't include Wild Bill Hickock, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and Bugs Bunny.

Ok as far as famous goes 2 major names pop up in my mind:
1: Sir RoberT Peel, bascially the founding father of Modern day policing.
2: Sam Steel of the Northwest Mounted Police, now called the RCMP.
As far as being a good hard ass cop I vote Bufford PUSSER, big man, bigger stick!
Also honarable mention to sheriff Joe Arpaio, the founder of Tent city and pink boxer shorts in Maricopa county, Arizona. As a C/O I gotta say we love JOE!!Giggity giggity Goo!

NOT FAIR
I thought of it instantly but was at work when the question was first posted , and couldn't log on
But I agree, and not the one you necessarily see portrayed in the movies, but the one that was once labeled "the most wounded law enfocement officer in the country"He had the johnsons to take on all comers,it cost him his wife first and finally (IMHO) himself when, I still think ,his vette was "tinkered" with.Mcnairy(sp) county will never see his likes again.
