Always be ready for an unexpected surprise..

Have you ever received an unexpected surprise, such as a phone call

from your mother in law saying she was coming to stay for a month, or a letter from IRS stating get ready for an audit?

My surprise came one evening not long ago, when a deputy sheriff knocked on my door and handed me a summons. I asked him what it was for and he said someone was suing me for personal injuries. I scratched my head trying to figure out where, why or when I had injured someone and was being sued.

Then, it came to mind, one evening at dusk, 2 years before, I pulled out of a restaurant and clipped the rear end of a vehicle driving without its lights on. The vehicle's driver was a young lady who said she was in a hurry and late for a date.
There was no damage done to my car, but a small dent was inflicted on the rear of hers, along with numerous others. I told her I was reporting it, but she said forget about it, as I'm not hurt, the car isn't either and I'm in a hurry and already late for a date with my boy-friend.
It so happened that a city motorcycle Cop was passing by and I hailed him. He smiled, made a report, issued no citations, then roared off on his Harley.

The next day, just to play it safe I called my insurance Co. and reported it.
Hearing nothing more, I forgot about it, til the deputy knocked on the door. This girl waited 2 years til the day the statute of limitations would run out, then decided to sue me, after being encouraged by a shyster attorney looking for an easy way to make some money.
My insurance company gave her a thousand bucks and the case was settled out of court.

People will sue for anything!

That's sadly the way the nation seems to be going these days. "Gimme" is the new word kids are being brought up saying before "mommy."

Yep, as the shyster got most of it.
I've been rear-ended 3 times, got a whip lash in one and shook up in the other two. Damages were paid by the other Ins. Co.'s, but I've never sued anyone for personal injuries.
