    Angry I Am Really Mad!

I am beyond steamed by what's happening with the Shawn Hornbeck case!

There has been a similar case before this, with Steven Staynor as the victim who finally ran away when his captor kidnapped a second child. He had been held captive for 8 years.

More recently, the girl in Austria that finally escaped after several years.

Despite the many experts appearing on the news, and trying to explain the kind of mental torture and control that was used on an 11 year old child, I continue to see these news bites...."Why didn't he run?"

Why are they blaming the victim???

Here are some more important questions to ask:

Why did no one in that neighborhood question the sudden appearence of an 11 year old in the home of a bachelor?

Why did no one wonder and report a child not in school?

Why did this dirt bag's family never wonder what was going on?

Why is everyone assuming it was Shawn that posted on his parent's MySpace page, and not the sick bastard that kidnapped him taunting the family?

Why are there so many pathetic adults out there that can't bring themselves to wrap their brains about what this child has endured, and what lies he has been told, and what fear and shame he has had to live with for the past four years?

    Shame on them all!!!!!

I've noticed that time and time again -- people keep blaming the victim. Same with criminal justice student in NY that was killed after going to a bar alone. Blame the victim and make saints out criminals. I just don't understand society.

Kids that age are dependant by nature. It would not take much time to make the child totally dependant on the kidnapper through threats, exploiting dependency, lies and deceit, even kindness. It’s sick and it’s not the kids fault.

If it was him, who wrote the question about how long well you look for your son, is the amount of trust this child built up with his captor. He was allowed a cell phone and possibly computer usage. Way to go KID!

    A Smile

A smile cost nothing, but gives so much.

It enriches those who receive it,
without making poorer those who give.
It takes but a moment, but the memory
    of it sometimes lasts forever.

None is so rich or mighty that he
    can get along without it,
and none is so poor but that
he can be made rich by it.

A smile creates happiness in the home,
    fosters goodwill in business,
and is the countersign of friendship.

It brings rest to the weary,
cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad,
and it is nature's best antidote for trouble.

Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed,
or stolen, for it is something that is of no
value to anyone until it is given away.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile.
Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile
so much as he who has no more to give.

Because its easier than trying to make sense of that prevert's mental processes. The news has mentioned at least one of those kids was, at times, left alone during much of the day and made no effort to escape. Obviously it has much to do with the psychology of victimization, which is far beyond the effort the press and the general public are willing to put into understanding anything.

I'm sure child abductors the world over are celebrating.

They are making the lies they tell those children the truth.

My take is for a lot of people it's fear. People fear things they don't understand. As nobody wants to be a victim they imagine they'd have done things differently, better. It's easier to second guess than to imagine themselves in the victim's situation.

Same thing as with the Kim family case last month. Many people were morbidly fascinated, others suddenly backwoods survivalist experts.

The media knows how to write the story to sell to both groups.

Heard the latest on the Kim incident? Now they're raking the small SO over the coals for making mistakes in judgment. Business as usual in the Court of Public Opinion.

The feeling I get here is that people and "the news" are trying to make sense of this and understand. Yes, the question keeps coming up on the local and national news but believe me people in this area are really happy for these two kids and their families. I'm sure some of the answers will come out but probably not all. I heard one psychologist state that probably the reason Ben was abducted is because Shawn was getting older. I'm afraid it's going to be a long road to recovery for Shawn especially. I was in the warrant office the other day and commented to the group of coppers there from various agencies about the good work of the Kirkwood coppers. Several commented that they would probably be up for indictment after dealing with the perv. Anyway, great job to all that had a hand in reuniting these kids with their families. Oh, by the way, the scumbag's lawyer's are going to plead not guilty for him and possibly ask for a change of venue.

    Up for indictment?!

Oh, do you mean the guys you talked to would be up for indictment because they would have given the guy a beat down? Or will the Kirkwood officers be up for indictment?

    They did an awesome job!

I hope the families of the boy's sues the family of the dirtbag for harboring a felon.

Sounds like maybe a little old-school police work. "Don't bump your WHAM! head, sir."

They're looking at this guy for two other disappearances in the area. One is a boy that went missing 12 years ago.
