I used to keep a variety of cichlids. Oscars were always big (pun intended), but I preferred the smaller and more colorful ones. These days I forget many of the names, but I always thought Egyptian Jewels were interesting for their color changes.

I got my convicts (Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum) to breed once (small distinctly striped male and larger albino female) but after selling the first 25 to the local pet store I had to give the rest to the owner to get rid of them. I got five pure albinos, five that didn't have good stripes and 40 with clear markings.

That sort of turned me off to the whole process. Here I'd been buying fish, chemicals, supplies, food from him at retail for years and he wouldn't give me more than 4 cents each for the first 25, (ended up just trading him for a box of filter charcoal) and then nothing. Guess I can be stubborn; haven't bought a fish for ten years and the last of mine died five years ago.

These days my hobbies are mostly talking politics and reading.
