Are we mentally prepared to fight a war?

Is the American public mentally prepared to fight a war? The tragic events of 9/11/01 should have driven a searing message into the minds and hearts of every man and woman, that this country was at war with an enemy that is as ruthless and intent on winning as any this great nation has ever fought.
Today, we have politicians playing politics with the war, who are against the president in every decision he makes, whether it's right or wrong and many would back the enemy before they would our Commander in Chief.
Anti war marches and demonstations by the famous and infamous are almost a daily occurrence and many take out their rage on burning our national banner and hanging the president in effigy.
Their cause is to bring home the troops immediatey, not realizing and many not caring what the consequences of taking such action would be.
Fanatical terrorists would love nothing better than for us to throw down the flag, give up the fight and leave Iraq. And,if we did so they would claim victory, then take the battle to us, in every village, town and city of America.
If anyone thinks these Islam fanatics will give up their dream of conquest and destroying us and all we stand for, if we pull out of Iraq, are sadly mistaken and in for a surprise. As, these people are dedicated in their purpose and fearless of death, which to those who kill non-believers, brings an immediate heavenly reward.
Each and every military death is a personal tragedy, which tears at our hearts and souls and every military man or woman who has died on the battlefield is an American hero.
This country was founded on blood and tears and a river of our proud heroes blood has flowed into the building of this great nation, which has endured only because we've had strong and patriotic citizens, who would defend and die for their country regardless of the costs.
US military deaths through hostile action in Iraq total approximately 2,0464 and 357 in Afghanistan. This doesn't include those who have died from accidental and other causes.
During WW-2 approximately 400,000 soldiers, marines, navy and coastguard's men lost their lives. And, in 2 battles alone, 19,300 perished. During the battle of Okinawa 12,500 of our military lost their lives and 6,800 died on Iwo Jima.
Back then, the vast majority of our citizenry and politicians came together as one, regardless of their beliefs and party affiliation and were solidly behind President FDR and the troops. All Americans at that time were mentally prepared to wage war against the enemy, regardless of what it would take to win.
We have no way of knowing how many more will die on the battlefields in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries of the world, including here in America; so we're going to have to be prepared mentally, to fight this war, or we'll lose it right here at home.

    Great Post.

My personal belief is...if it's possible to negotiate without violence, do it. But if you feel the only alternative is to fight...then don't f**k around being polite about it. Go in hard, fast, and take out the jugular. You don't second guess, you don't play games, you don't dance around trying to be politically correct. You don't play by the rules. You do what you have to do to win.

If you go into a fight...you go into it to win. If you want to win...you throw away the 'let's play nice' handbook...and just DO it.

It's not a game. It's not a Hollywood production. It's not easy...and yes, it's tragic. That's what war is. It's ugly and brutal and costly. I hope to God I'm wrong, but I personally don't believe America has the stomach to truely commit herself. JMHO

I agree 100%. This bull crap about soldiers going to prison for 30 years after beating a rag head is bull crap. When they set up explosives and blow the hell out of Convoys traveling down the road, wether it be military or not....if they do get caught, they go to gitmo and live a better life then they do now. three hot meals a day, nice cable tv, nice bed.

Make that place a Walmart parking lot and be done with it. In combat, there is no such thing as a fair fight.

I'm alittle meaner, then the general public. I say you go after thier religion. You dump cow blood all over thier holy sites. You embaress them.....strike them in thier weak points. You can fawk with'em hard with out firing a single round.

I agree 100%. The politicans are going to screw it up and bail out. Then we'll get slam dunked here. In the process the democrats will have to pass a bunch of gun control measures so we don't have a prayer to even fight back if necessary. I really believe these fanatics will bring bring it right back to us.

Well...it's kind of nice to see I'm not the only one who thinks along those lines. The reactions I get from friends and family, when I talk like that, is shocked disbelief...but WTF? It's a friggin' war.

It just seems logical to me that you do whatever it takes...you break them down physically, mentally, emotionally....you break their spirit....you rob them of ANY thing that gives them strength and the ability to fight back.

I'm really not a violent person...but when I commit to engage in a confrontation, I go into it determined to win, and I don't carry a rule book. Otherwise...why bother?

Newt Gingrich made a great speech on this subject recently - I'm told that it's on the Internet but I heard segments of it on the radio.

One thing he talked about was the would-be terrorists whom the UK caught before they had a chance to blow up 10 planes, and how one of them hid explosives in his own 10-month-old baby's things.

The jest was that anyone with the conviction to sacrifice their 10-month-old baby would defeat our mindset if we don't wake up - We've fallen asleep at the switch again after 9/11. The Military hasn't, but the public has.

    I agree.

    Mentally prepared

My take. During WWII and Korea, when the Soldiers, Marines, etc went to war, it fos for the duration plus 6 mos. You NEVER knew when you were comming home, if at all. I remember seeing young men lined up at the Marine Recruiting Stations trying to enlist, KNOWING they were going to the Pacific, with little chance of returning in one piece, if they were lucky. Along comes Vietnam. The tour was 12 months then home. Americans are used to the "fast service." If you don't get what you want immediately, you bitch, moan and complain. Llike one Pol said Its a fast food mentality. Instant gratification. Pres Bush, after 911 told the american people the war against terror could take 10 yrs or longer. (And it will). Then the Pols got involved. Bring em home, NOW. Well, we will LOSE the war in Iraq and suffer the consequences. It was nice living in America; now we will have to get used to living in a socialist 2d world country. We are doomed.

Like I keep saying, pull back to Iraq's borders and kill everything that crosses it either way with airpower - Drop AK-47's in Iraq, let them fight it out themselves, and nuke them if the wrong side wins

I'm hoping for the latter, because we could use some oil - Make it safe for Exxon to move in, and we have it made

I'm very fearful of what will happen in America after the US is forced to pull out of Iraq before the battle is won. Every Law Enforcement officer in America will have to become a military defender of this country. For the first time in hundreds of years our own military will be deployed and fighting on our own soil. And I predict that the idiots that are now campaigning for us to leave Iraq will blame Bush for this too. Lets not sugar coat anything the war is going to come to our shores, are we really ready to fight it with both hands tied behind our back? Are we ready to fight it the way the Democrats and Liberals want it fought?? As a nation are we ready for the suicide bombings of our churches, malls, schools?? No my friends were not ready at all.

Here is my take on this, as a former Marine and an inner city kid. I don't think America will ever be the force to reckon with like it was in the 40's and 50's. We have spent to many years pussyfying American kids and kissing the asses of Non-Americans. I see this stuff on the police department at the park in my neighborhood, when I was in the Marines every where. When I was growing up (not that old just different house values) in the same neighborhood I live in now, we kept the kids from other neighborhoods/parishes out of ours, if somebody talked shit about you, your family, your girlfriend, you beat his ass and called it a night. Now, you do that lawsuits are filed, police are called it is bs. When I was in the Military, there was a little known about clash on the Cambodian/Thai border http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/9708/27/cambodia/index.html
we were being sent. All these asshat clowns were crying about how we might have to fight, how they didn't sign up to fight and so on and so on. I looked at them like they were pussies because they were we joined a military, which if I remember correctly fights, kills, and gets killed, all part of the job. Same with these whiney ass liberals now crying about the amount dead in Iraq, it is a shame that men and women are dying but they are willfully doing their jobs. They VOLUNTEERED, most want to go back. Plus for the amount we have lost to date for the amount of time we have been there, and the ours vs theirs kill ratio we are doing a phenominal job. On the police department I have seen the pussification of America by seeing other recruits who had never ever been in any type of physical confrontation and were afraid to get into any type of physical confrontation. I see it on the street were they show fear towards the bg, most of these putzes are here to collect a check. Most people have forgotten 9/11 ever happened. No one cares, all they care about is letting illegals have rights, themselves, that there are no guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, it is pathetic. I raise my kids the way I want them raised, they will be tough but respectful. I was. It will take something even more terrible than 9/11 to snap Americans awake, I hate to say it but it is true. This is Pedro signing out.

I agree Pedro, and something much worse than 9/11 is coming. I dont know when or how, but mark my words its coming. Americas true resolve, or lack thereof, will then be shown to the whole world.

Our troops have the guts to fight a war the way it should be fought, but our chicken-shit politicians don't. We need a Patton or an Eisenhower that isn't afraid to get the job done. When the libs. prevail, we're in a world of crap. As long as we are taking the war to the Islamists, they are staying out of the U.S. As soon as we leave, I fear it'll be at our doorstep.

I agree...but I think that the ground work for a war on our soil has already been laid.

It sure makes you look at the internment of Japanese during WWII in a whole other light, doesn't it? Especially knowing how many efforts were made to attack the west coast? Another example of a culture that supported horrendous acts against their perceived enemies.

We take so much much pride in being a melting pot, but I think that has often been at the expense of an "American" identity.

Our great conundrum as a Western society, is that we try so hard to act with a sense of honor and fair-play, but we are dealing with an enemy that has no honor at all.

    Pdawg,
That is true the enemy has no sence of fair play. But the Liberals still wont listen, they still think the world is rosey colored and everything will be fine. unfortunatly these are the people who are running the majority of the show here in the US. And this is playing straight into the enemies hands. Once they wake up and smell the coffee, Im afraid it will be to late to ever bring things back to the way they once were. I just hope they wake up soon enough for us to keep this country..........well, our country.

9/11 was a wake-up call call similar to 12/7/41. The public stayed fully awake after Pearl Harbor, put their political differences aside, got behind the president and prepared mentally and physically for an all out war.
The public woke up after 9/11 then went back to sleep, thinking that terrorism was over exagerated, politicized and dismissed from their minds the events that happened on that terrible day.
The enemy back in the 40's was very similar to the one of today, as both were and are fanatical and determined to win or die for their cause. The Japanese had their kamakaze suicide planes while the Islam fanatics have their suicide bombers and neither hesitate/ed/s to use them.
To fight an enemy like this and expect to win, we're going to have to set our minds on fighting a war and winning it, regardless of what it takes to do the job. If we don't our trivial complaints today would seem insignificant, compared with what they could be like.
At the present, terrorists have come home to roost and intent on fighting a last ditch battle in Iraq to prevent a new and democratic government from succeeding.
They have a lot going for them, as they are encouraged and given comfort and a renewed strength by the lack of enthusiasm and the show of weakness on the part of liberal politicians and others, who want our main line of offense pulled out of Iraq. These people are praying for this to happen, as they observe us very closely, watching for any sign of reluctance on our part to fight a war. To them this is a show of weakness of which they'll take full advantage of, in ways we're not accustomed to and seriously doubt if the pampered public of today are prepared and able to cope with.
Today we have a different social structure and mindset from that of 6o plus years ago and Pearl Harbor, when there were few if any illegal aliens and liberalism had a completely different meaning than it has today.
Back then kids started each day with prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the flag and none complained. The ten commandments was displayed in every building of public occupancy and everyone enjoyed Christmas, Easter and religious holidays, regardless if they were Christians or not.
