Using the word Telecommunicators to make Dispatchers or in fact, just Radio Operators, sound important, is just like someone saying they're a Refuse Disposal Operative. They still talk garbage.

It's nice when you do have a decent dispatcher who can give you direction. Its not so nice when you have to tell the dispatcher directions or when you can't get them to answer you. Or when they give crap information. Or when they don't know what the heck they are talking about. Or when they...etc. You guys get the point.

Actually, some places do exactly that (route calls to officer's dept. cells) and then the officers input the info into an MDT or write it on a blotter. Granted, these places are usually extremely small. But when was the last time you heard of a dispatch center without cops to actually go to the calls?

Communications is the first line of defense in the chain of officer safety, imho.
A good dispatcher makes better (and safer) officers, a poor one can get a cop killed. I applaud those who take their job seriously, and take the time to learn what street cops need to know on any call.
I believe that dispatchers should do a few ride-alongs while training. Bravo to the departments that actually include it in their training programs for communications personnel.

I think that's why some departments only allow ride-alongs with the shift supervisors. (No guarantee that there won't be a problem, but less likely, I guess. I think its really needed, though. Such activities give communications folks a really important perspective on what questions street officers immediately have when answering a variety of calls.
