He
He’s up before the sun, down the stairs he creeps
Pours himself a cup of joe, tries to wake from sleep
Pulls on his important stuff, boots badge and gun
Walks down the hallway quietly, past his sleeping son
Strides out to his office on four wheels, the one in black and white
Says a silent prayer to God that he will make it back alright
Out of the driveway, and onto the empty street
Takes a few lefts and rights until he makes it to his beat
4 tickets, a break in, and yet another stolen car
Someone said thanks, a punk spit on his star
One code 3 pursuit, the result of twisted steel
An hour standing in the rain, yet another missed meal
Finally he makes it back home as the sun sets low
Another shift in the books, and in his soul he knows
For all that he endured today, luck was on his side
Tomorrow he could leave behind, yet another widowed bride.
500 fights, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 500 street fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate tough guy. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are.
