Symbolism is important to the General Assembly. That’s the underpinning for the proposed amendment to the state constitution to declare English as the state’s official language.

But if the Legislature approves the largely symbolic amendment, the message will be clear — if you don’t speak our language you’re less of a citizen than the rest of us.

IMO, If a foreigner immigrates to the US he should speak the language even if it's broken English.
When foreigners are at home or by themselves let them speak their gibberish, but when they're in buildings of public assembly they should speak our language.
It's getting to the point where the Hispanic language is heard almost as much as the English language, especially in restaurants, grocery and department stores.
I'll bet many LEO's have been cussed out by smiling foreigners, when they thought they were being praised.

I'm tired of public schools teaching a Spanish curriculum. Seriously, I don't see why my tax dollars need to go towards funding special education for illegal aliens.

Every other group that ever immigrated to this country took on aspects of our culture... Our language, our flag, etc. These illegals come here flying Mexican flags on their trucks/porches/etc. They refuse to follow our laws, and don't even have the decency to learn our language.

If this sounds harsh, so be it. I'm tired of it... and it is a HUGE problem around here (and I'm nearly square in the middle of the United States)

In New York state its manditory in high school now to have a foreign language, choices are spanish and french. Knowing another language is a good thing, but I don't want it forced onto our kids by some liberal asshole thats worried we might offend someone. If they want to live here, THEY need to learn ours.
As for me, I don't speak spanish and I don't want to learn how!!!!!

This bending over backwards for the Spanish population is getting out of control. In NC they can get the DMV License handbook printed in Spanish, take the written test in Spanish, and have an interpreter provided for them for the driving test!!! If they dont know English enough to pass a driving test, why are we giving it to them in Spanish?? Where are the Spanish road signs and such?? (bet there coming).

I agree with you Coloradocop! Every time I go out I feel like I've crossed the boarder.

Edit ~ I just called my credit card company. The first thing I heard was "To hear your options in English please press 1." What an insult! Why should I have to press 1? If this isn't bad enough I'm still on hold.

We already do. All else is either enrichment, hobby, or being politically correct. I do think it wise to know enough to understand if you've been insulted in at least 4 languages...

Under the circumstances, the safest thing to do would be to put up more Spanish road signs!
