Dolittle Raider
I went to a presentation by one of the 15 living members of the Dolittle Raiders last night. Lt. T.L Griffen was the navigator on the ninth plane to take off from the deck of the Hornet to bomb Japan in April of 1942. For about an hour and a half, myself and about 300 other people listened to this living history. He bailed out over China, went on to evade capture by the Japanese, and was assigned to a bomb group in Europe. Once there, he was shot down and survived a crash landing, only to be shot down again and captured by the Nazis and imprisoned. He is 90 years old, and if you ever get the chance to hear him, take it. It was a memorable night. As it happened, the friend I went with is the son of a member of the original Tuskegee Airmen. He has a diary that his father wrote from the beginning of his service until after the war was over. He was an armorer, but he writes about the conditions at the different bases, as well as his feeling when plane and pilots are lost. I read about 1/2 of it last night, and it's fascinating.
The whole evening made me appreciate the sacrifice that has been made to preserve my freedom. For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

Man that is beyond awsome!!!! I wish I could have been there. I've met some of the Tuskegee Airmen. They meet every now and then at Seymour Johnson Airforce base in NC.

That is really cool!!

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

I'd love to hear that. History rocks.

Yeah anytime I get a chance to hear first hand accounts like that I jump on it. I must say that Im a little jealous, opportunities like what you experienced are gettting fewer and fewer.
