crime committed right on the line between two states?
What happens if someone commits a crime right on the line between two states, and police from both states arrive at the crime scene at the same time? Which state's police get the criminal? In which state is the criminal tried?
For instance, what if someone standing on one side of a state line shoots a person standing on the other side of the state line?
Or what if a person with one foot on each side of a state line shoots a person with one foot on each side of a state line?
Just wondering.

If it crosses state lines, it becomes a Federal offense...which is good, because you don't spend 15 years on death row when it's federal.

I was in similar dilemna once., hostage situation we get the guy to give up and rescue seriously injured victim who is transported across state line for treatment and dies 3 days later. We of course had jurisdiction including the death, however the state she died in looked at charging the perp as well. My perp pled to AGG. Murder....they decided waiting for him to get released from a life sentence wasn't prudent.

This is a ridiculously unlikely scenario.
Some crimes are dependant on statutes to decide who has jurisdiction over the crime.
I know of one case where a deputy was dispatch to an accident (not a crime, but whatever).
Amotorcycle wiped out in a neighboring county, and the guy (and bike) slid across the county line, and into said deputies county.
The neighboring county had to do the accident report because the first harmful event happened in his county .Last edited by jmur5074; 04-23-07 at 08:50 PM.

Let the brass sort it out. That's part of what state's attorneys, attorney generals, etc. get paid for, and if the Feds want it, let them have it.

Simple solution,, either drag the victim on the side of the line where the suspect is,, or kick the suspect in the ass and boot him over there,,
or as the case would be,,, lock him up and let the court decide

Being bordered by 3 Ms. counties we run into this every now and then,Most recently about 3 weeks ago, when Ms. deputies jumped an SUV "way back up in the woods",they called for us to come try to ID the people,(they were pulled off in some woods smokin crack),as they were giving obviously bogus names. We finally find them and sure enough they are 3 of our frequent flyers. We let Ms. take the "paraphenalia" arrest,we took the 1 with a warrant through our agency and we sent the 3rd one on a very long hike.
.It would be virtually impossible for us to tell what state we were in (other than the state of confusion
)and I can assure you they didn't know either.
Jennas' scenario is very unlikely to happen, but it would be the agency where the most harmful event happened. As stated chances of something happening "exactly"on the line are very slim.

If you have a city/cities that are on the state line then it would be possibel for a shooter to shoot across the street/state lline,,, but like the others say,,, highly unlikely to ocurr that way and I would guess that the suspect would be charged in the jurisdiction where he was when he pulled the trigger
To be a good Law Enforcement Officer you MUST know the law!

I work VERY far from the state line either way, so this is totally irrelevant, and quite ridiculous.

I'd say each jurisdiction ought to do their own separate investigation, and then separately charge the suspect in each jurisdiction.
