Do you have a teddy bear in your cruiser?

From the news, but not really newsy so much as an idea to pass along. It makes a lot of sense to me.

I would think it'd be better all around if the stuffed critter was in vacuum sealed bag to keep it clean and save space. Is there a downside I'm missing?

Teddy bears to comfort frightened kids
    Leonor Vivanco, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 04/29/2007 12:00:00 AM PDT

FONTANA - Being involved in a car accident, watching a parent being arrested by the police, or falling victim to a crime can be traumatic for many people, especially for children.

Thanks to the Assistance League of the Foothill Communities, Fontana police officers will be getting little helpers to comfort children.

This month, the league made a donation to the Police Department - 60 brown, furry teddy bears that will help comfort young victims. The City Council formally accepted the donation last week.

"Anytime that they go through something traumatizing or horrific, even if their parents get arrested, we suggest they give them to the kids just to make them feel better," said Heather Howard, community policing technician in the crime-prevention unit of the Fontana Police Department.

The teddy bears can help them feel more secure and even develop a bond with the officers, she said.

"The victims, usually the younger ones especially, they're scared and a lot of times seeing their parents arrested are fearful of the officers," Howard said.

Fontana police Sgt. Tom Yarrington has given the bears to children, asking them to take care of his "friend."

"Usually, it's taken away the stress a little and the anxiety level they've been through," he said.

He remembered one incident where a girl was hurt in a car crash.

"She just grabbed the bear and started caring for the bear and forgot about the pain she was in," Yarrington said.

It's also helped open up communication for young crime victims, the sergeant said.

He said he's given a bear to a child who whispered to the bear what happened and pretends the bear whispers back to them and then slowly opens up to police.

The teddy bear supports them much like a security blanket, he said.

"It kind of puts them in the comfort zone," Yarrington said.

The Assistance League gives the cuddly bears not only to police departments but also to fire departments and hospitals to help calm children when they are upset or afraid.

The Ottawa Police Service has been doing that for years too. As an Explorer, I am the one that checks the patrol cars and puts a new bear in the trunk if the officer gave it away. The bears are dressed up in little police uniforms too, its really cool

When I was about 6, my family was in a bad car accident, my mom was terribly injured and could have been killed in the accident (she wasn't thank God). Now at this point in time, I for some reason, was scared shitless of cops. The police officer that arrived at the scene gave me a brown teddy bear, and than he was my best bud, all my fears of cops and what was happening subsided. From that point on in my life I don't remember being one bit scared of cops. I will always remember the officer. I don't know his name and I know I have asked my mom but it was long ago and I can't remember. I may have to ask her again sometime and find out whatever happened to the guy but it's funny how that little bear and the officers attitude made everything I had thought about police officers up to that point disappear, and now look where it got me . Oh ya and I still have that bear!

I have done this for years but the department doesn't by them I will usually go to the goodwill store and pick up one or two as needed. But they do look at you a little starange when you stop in on duty to pick them up.

Hmmm... I don't know if CBPD does this (it would be nice if they did). I will ask during my next CPA class. I know they're always looking for stuffed animals for Rocky (K-9). They're his reward for a job well done.

I actually don't carry them anymore in my cruiser as I have moved to day shift. But when i was working the evenings i did carry stuffed animals all the time.

Every time an officer gets into his cruiser...there's a teddy bear in the cruiser.

Our local department has stuffed animals in their squads sitting between the headrests (right near the officers). One officer even has them scattered all through out his squad...all within squeezing distance. Coincidence?

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.
