I'm pissed.
So I go into the bookstore today to get the rest of the books I need for my sociology class that starts on Wednesday. I've already bought the THREE books (that cost me $80), but just had to pick up a clicker and pass code. So for you old schoolers I will explain. They have this new thing now, pretty much it's just another way to rip everyone off. You get a remote looking thing and when you're in class instead of getting a piece of paper for a quiz, the quiz is up on the screen and you click in your answers on your remote. Pretty much its because professors have gotten too lazy. Anyways.... so I go to get this crap and it costs me 40 fricken dollars. The remote cost me $22 and and a little piece of cardboard with a code on it to access the system cost me $16.
Here have a visual so you can see this pathetic shit that I am now the proud new owner of. Did I mention I can't sell them back?

Don't think of it as a rip off, think of it as an investment into your future. Or some shit like that.
And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.

College book stores are the modern day version of the old company stores in the coal mines. They got your ass there and they have no competition.

My school has two rooms with access to the on screen quizzes. However, the difference is that the remotes are provided for us in those two rooms. It's just my school trying to keep up with the times. We just recently got one smart screen for one of the math rooms.
You got 3 sociology books for $80?! Or were they that much apiece? When I took sociology last year I only needed one book and that costed me $90 by itself.Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.

Our community colleges still use Scantrons (the cards that you use pencil to color in the little boxes). They cost about 25 cents each.
Ya know, Amazon does sell used textbooks. Some are rediculously cheap, but sometimes they're old editions, so watch out for that - I never cared, except when they totally re-arrange the chapters.

I've taken one semester of soc. But I've taken 4 semesters of some aspect of psychology.
The Praxis State test I took last saturday was done in Scantron form(except the long essays, etc). My college is predominantly Scantron or short answer tests/quizzes. Only two rooms have the electronic thing and they are still in the process of integration.

We still use scantrons, but lots of professors choose to use the remotes because it uncollimated pretty much any work.
I do buy all my textbooks on amazon. It makes it cheaper, but still pricey.

The real rip is when the prof wites the text prescribed for the class. Publish or perish becomes publish and prosper.

I'm pissed for you as this seems to be more about a friend of someone in administration with a product to sell than a benefit to education. At the same time I'm still trying to figure out another way to use uncollimated in a sentence.
