Just a lesson in Oz Speak
Just something came up elsewhere, so I thought it was best to start a new thread. It came about because we have a beer called piss.

Yes, it's the same here, but it's also slang for beer, go to the pub and suck some piss = go to the hotel for a beer. Or to take the piss out of someone = is to ridicule them. To be on the piss means to be consuming alcoholic drinks (normally with the view of getting drunk) and that the best type of piss is cheap piss or free piss and that to be pissed = drunk and if you get too pissed here, you're pissed as a fart.
And if its pissing down means its raining lots.
Some other popular sayings are
Fair dinkum : true, genuine
Dry as a dead dingo's donger: very dry
Flat out like a lizard drinking : flat out, busy
Bloke : man, guy
True blue : patriotic
G'day : hello!
Hooroo : goodbye
Wuss : coward; nervous person or animal
Pig's arse! : I don't agree with you
Liquid laugh : vomit
Veg out : relax in front of the TV (like a vegetable)
Good oil : useful information, a good idea, the truth
Plonk : cheap wine
Wombat : somebody who eats, roots and leaves
Root (verb and noun) : synonym for f**k in nearly all its senses: "I feel rooted"; "this washing machine is rooted"; "(s)he's a good root". A very useful word in fairly polite company.
B & S : Bachelors' and Spinsters' Ball - a very enjoyable party usually held in rural areas
Chook : a chicken
Mystery bag : a sausage
Furphy : false or unreliable rumour
Bush : the hinterland, the Outback, anywhere that isn't in town
Figjam : "F**k I'm good; just ask me". Nickname for people who have a high opinion of themselves.
Stoked : very pleased
Banana bender : a person from Queensland
Sandgroper : a person from Western Australia
Mexican : a person from south of the Queensland or New South Wales border
Wowser : straight-laced person, prude, puritan, spoilsport
Who opened their lunch? : OK, who farted?
Bingle : motor vehicle accident
Crack a fat : get an erection
Mate : buddy, friend
That's just on the top of my head.

Thanks for the lesson in Australian English Slang. I learn something new every day. I've heard of some of these expressions but others are down right funny. Especially for the non or mis informed such as myself.
The only images I have had of Australians center around fighting Crocodiles.
Paul Hogan aka Crocodile Dundee
Steve Irwin aka The Croc Hunter, RIP
And for the women, and I am possibly dating myself but here goes.
Olivia Newton John famous actress and singer
Probably some Rock groups in there but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Well what about Emilie de Ravin, who plays Claire Littleton in Lost ~

Alan Dale (Ugly Betty)

Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck & Charmed) (son of a former Prime Minister of Oz)

.....just 3 I can think in current TV shows ~ *LOL* ~ and I'm told they're filming The Bold and The Beautiful or similar here and one of the actresses throws in some Aussie slang.

That explains it, those are current shows. Within the past few years my computer has replaced my TV so I don't watch as much as I used to.
These look like they would be good actors, though.

No worries, yer great galah. Just that I worked on the same team as a guy who was ex Aussie army for 15 years, so got used to the terms. He's retired now and back in Oz.

Ok, I know, I'm bad, or mis-informed, not sure which. I keep hearing Australia referred to as Oz so does that have any thing to do with "The Land of Oz" or "The Wizard of Oz"?
