Crown Vics
Word going through my department was this is the last year that Ford is making the car and that it will be replaced by the Chevy Impala which is being designed to have a bigger passenger compartment. Anyone know if there is any truth to it?

Well I dont think Ford will replace the Crown Vic with a Chevrolet product. But I wouldnt be surprised if something like the Ford 500 replaced the Crown Vic.

The rumor that Ford will drop the Crown Vic line, including the Police Interceptor model, keeps going around. Haven't seen 'em do it yet... Ford still has the lion's share of the law enforcement market, and I don't see that changing fast. There are pros and cons to both the Dodge Magnum and the Chevy Impala, which I think are the main competition...
What I'd anticipate is that if Dodge & Chevy start to make a significant dent in Ford's market -- they'll respond. They'll either change the CVPI, or they'll bring out something new. But they won't until they have to... Look at their response to the issue with the "flaming trunk of death."

i would have to think that this is highly unlikely.
But, with the economy the way it is, and this company buying this and that, it really wouldnt surprise me.

I think I just read somewhere that the Five Hundred will be renamed "Taurus" because sales have been slow under the Five Hundred model name.
I've heard that the CVPI will remain more or less as is at least until 2008 or 2009.Never have so many owed so much to so few.

Yeah, I've been hearing that "this was the last year Ford will make Crown Vics" for the last 3 years.

A friend of mine that works for Ford and I were talking about this very thing a few months ago. Turns out that the rumor was actually started by the other auto companies. In fact the CV is not going anywhere. The only thing that is actually changing for the CV is that it will not be a civilian car any longer around 2008/2009.
As for the Five Hundred, it is actually the Taurus but was renamed to the Five Hundred because it came as an all wheel drive vehicle. They are changing the name for the 07/08 season and are suppose to be increasing the HP by around 50 in the Taurus.
Also the CV is suppose to get a decent power boost as well for the 2009/2010 year.Being the best is not what always counts. What counts is always trying your best.

I was glad to see all of the safety features they will be installing for you guys. Ballistic door panels, side impact air bags and Tested in 75-mph rear-end crash. Can't err in the way of safety. I guess that bullet proof glass will be next. Maybe they will retrofit a supercharger / turbocharger or something along those lines for you guys. Something to handle all the extra weight the car has to haul around as opposed to the civilian version.

Read closer...
Most of those are options... I'd say that very few agencies will buy most of them... Maybe more will go for the ballistic panels for special purpose cruisers, but I doubt most regular patrol cruisers will get them...
Oh... And there's a reason why Ford tested the CVPI in high speed crashes from the rear... Seems they've got a track record of fairing poorly in such crashes... Unless, of course, your idea of handling a high-speed rear impact is going up in flames.

Well hopefully they will make it more cost effective so that more agencies will purchase the options. No, my idea of handling a high speed rear impact is seeing you guys come out alive. God knows how many rear collisions have happened where LEO's have been severely injured or killed by DUI's and such. Like moths attracted to a flame / light, etc.

Actually, I think just about ANY car would have that track record. It's just that police cars, out of ANY cars on the road, are in these types of collisions the most, due to the nature of the job.
You put 100 Honda Accords in 75mph rear end collisions, and do the same with CVPIs, I bet the results wouldn't be that far off."If anything worthwhile comes of this tragedy, it should be the realization by every citizen that often the only thing that stands between them and losing everything they hold dear... is the man wearing a badge." -- Ronald Reagan, in the wake of the deaths of 4 CHP troopers in the Newhall Incident, 1970
