Missing....thought and prayers needed
Hello everyone. I just thought that I would share an awful story with you. The area where I grew up is currently searching for the body of a young boy that jumped off the tailrace into the river. He got pulled under, and his body has not been seen ever since. There are crews looking for his body. I went to school with this kid. He was a couple years younger than me, but he was very active in our Student Government Association. He was a very smart guy. He was a student at Virginia Tech. His girlfriend of 2 1/2 years just graduated high school with my sister this year. This really hits close to home, and I would appreciate it if you all would please pray for Greg, his family, girlfriend, and friends. I have posted articles that were in the local paper telling details of this tragic event.
East Podunk- Wednesday afternoon, four friends had an early supper at a fast food restaurant and then decided to beat the heat by going for a swim.
They apparently chose the wrong place to cool off.
They went to the Roanoke Rapids Dam and leapt off the bank into the water on the back side of the dam known as the tailrace. All four jumped in; three came out, according to authorities.
The fourth is an 18-year-old from Valentines, Va. According to Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent, the young man leapt into the water, came to the surface, went back under and has not been seen again. Vincent declined to release any names this morning.
The 911 call came in last night just after 5. The sheriff's office, along with Gaston Fire and Rescue and the Roanoke Valley Rescue Squad, searched the river until 10:30 p.m., when conditions became too dangerous to continue.
The search resumed at 5 a.m. this morning, and the two rescue teams were joined by a North Carolina Division of Emergency Management SONAR team. The rescuers are also using underwater cameras to help search.
As of 9 a.m., several rescue boats were out on the river and six rescue divers were on standby.
The Littleton Volunteer Fire Department and the Roanoke-Wildwood Fire Department have also joined the effort.
Vincent said, “Hopefully we will have a recovery pretty soon here,” and added that if the rescue units currently searching are not successful, he will call in air units, dog teams and swift water rescue units to assist.
The three surviving jumpers are from Roanoke Rapids, Littleton and Henrico.
East Podunk - The search continues for a young man last seen in the water after he jumped into the East Podunk Dam's tailrace for a swim with friends.
The East Podunk Sheriff's Office led at least five agencies in a search of the river for the 18-year-old Valentines, Va., resident.
Thursday, searchers raised the water level of the river in an effort to expedite the search and incorporated a Highway Patrol helicopter and a private fixed-wing aircraft. The search ended at midnight, when conditions became too dangerous to continue, and resumed at 7 this morning.
Several boats, sonar units and a group of rescue divers have joined forces to scour the river, according to the East Podunk County Sheriff.
A County dog search team had also joined in the search and approximately 100 people are working to find the missing man, said Paul Doe, commander of the East Podunk Rescue Squad.

I think it's safe to say at this point that the location effort is that of a recovery nature.
Just shows you, you never know when you're going to go. Tell your loved ones you love them before it's too late.

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
Found blackberry riots and
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

I got back in town and just found out about it. We have been telling people for years to stay away from the tail race. I understand that the generator below the water pulled him under and he drowned. It is a shame. Thoughts and prayers to the family.I'm ready for spring!
