I give out candy to trick-or-treaters, I check with a couple of my friends' children to find out what the most desired candy is each season. I love it when the kids see what I have and say something like "Ooooh, she's got Skittles."

I pick my own pumpkin, carve it and toast the seeds, but I don't decorate and I don't dress up in costume unless I'm going to a party.
One community here does something that I think is kind of weird and not much fun for the kids.....parents park their cars in a big circle in a parking lot and kids trick-or-treat from car to car.

last time I went trick or treating was probably about 8 years ago when I was hanging out with some girl who had a kid.

I stopped going Trick or Treating when I was probably 10, just wasn't any fun anymore.

I never went trick-or-treating as a kid--my parents were afraid someone would abduct or hurt me, or give me poisoned candy, if I tried knocking on strangers' doors. Many of my childhood friends' parents had the same fears.
Now I live in an apartment complex where most residents don't have school-aged kids and those who don't live in the apartment would have to be buzzed in by someone they know, so we don't get trick-or-treaters.
None of my friends seem to be into Halloween parties either. Maybe it's due to concern that someone might get offended by a costume or the idea of Halloween or something (we tend to have "winter celebration parties" rather than "Christmas parties"
).
I do enjoy walking around on Halloween and seeing all the people wearing weird costumes on the street, though.

500 fights, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 500 street fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate tough guy. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are.

Funny story about last Halloween:
I was sitting at the house, on call, and I had misplaced my walkie talkie. I was sitting in my house at about 0100 hrs thinking "Now WTF did I do with that radio?". I went out to my unit and I was digging around under the seat trying to find it when I heard voices. I looked up over the top of my car and saw several off duty police dept employees, officers included, and some other agency officers trying to roll my yard. (All of them were good friends of mine) One of them finally noticed me and said "Shhh, he's outside!". I let them know I saw them and we all had a big laugh. I told them I was sorry I spoiled their fun but that they could come back after I went in and finish the job if they promised to clean it up the next day.*************************"It wouldn't take much for me to up and run...to another life somewhere in the sun."

Actually, my church does this, its called trunk-or-treating. Everyone dresses up and parks their cars in the church parking lot and decorates their cars in some type of Halloween type motif and the kids get dressed up, go from car to car collecting treats. The church opens up their rec hall and provides games, face painting and a haunted house tour for the kids to enjoy. Fun is had by all who attend. It provides a safer alternative for the kids to partake in instead of going around a neighborhood where you might not know everyone.
