Scanners
Who here owns a scanner??
If you do, do you listen to it?
Why do you listen to it??
I own one. I typically don't have it on unless I'm getting ready for work. I like to know what I'm getting myself into before I go to work.
But I'll also turn it on if I hear sirens in my neighborhood...but that's about it. I live in a less than lovely neighborhood, and like to know if the local crackheads are beating on eachother...and how far from my front porch they are.No one has greater love than this, to lay down ones life for ones friends - John 15:13

My dad had one when I was a kid. I don't own one, I want nothing to do with work when I am off.

I used to have one so I could scan the local PD channel and listen to the State Police.

I had one
I had a scanner for years and then we went to the Trunked 800mhz system and scanners can't track our calls. I guess you can buy some fancy rig but is way too expensive. I listened cause I wanted to know what my folks were doing....and I lived and ate the work too.
After the new radio system came in, the media stopped showing up every time we did something so I guess it was ok in that respect. I finally got too busy to listen much and by then I was getting called every night for something or other anyway.

NO WAY, Like Beans, I don't want to listen to any of it while I am off duty. My Mom is 72 yrs old and lives in scanner land,,, it drives me nuts when I am at her house.

Like you said I will turn on my portable if I hear sirens near by; which is rare. Also I usually turn it on when I am getting ready for work...

I had one,But as stated above we went to the trunked 700 system which made it useless(any buyers??),it was mainly so Dapples could keep track of me
BUT the best thing was when we went out of town ,it was turned on as a radio would be ,to keep the sound of "voices" in the house.

I have one I inherited from my father when he got a new one. I like to listen to it on occasion.

Nah, if I wanted to listen I'd take my portable home.

I wouldn't mind getting one to see what's happening in my area from time to time. It would also be cool if I could tune in online to major cities around the US just to see what's happening.
Maybe LEF could have a live scanner feature. Hmmmmmmm?

I do. I've got an old trunking handheld.
Rarely. At the moment, I don't even know where it is. I think it might be in my "War" bag.
I used work a ward adjacent to the city lines of my city, and another large city. I used it to listen in on the neighboring city when I worked, so I could be aware of what trouble might be heading my way and could prepare accordingly.
Now that I work more inner city, I really don't use my scanner at all. I'll use it for the same reason as you, checking on the FD or PD if they come near around my house, but I usually don't even get bored enough to do that anymore. For now, when i'm off work, my scanner and my radio is a distant memory, and my off time is all mine.

I like my scanner for two reasons.
1. I am a nosey bastard.
2. I get a kick out of hearing my Wife on the radio.
Admittedly, if I had to listen to a radio for eight hours, I would not listen at home.dlefdal said:

No. I listen to the thing all shift. If they need me that bad, they can call my cell.

Shortly after we switched over to 800Mhz trunked statewide, the media almost immediately bought new scanners. They were almost non-existent for a month or so until they figured out what was up, then once they got scanners they were back. Bummer.
I never listen at home. My wife is a dispatch supervisor, and would ring my neck if I did! I do turn on the VHF portable once in a while if I hear a siren. We are a small town out in the boonies, so usually if you hear a siren, it's the VFD. I kinda like hearing what they have going on, then usually shut it right back off.

Yep, I'm a dork. I usually leave mine on for some background noise. It's also nice to hear when we, as in FD, are gonna get called out.
I don't live where I work so I don't have to worry about listening my Dept on the radio.

I have one in my unit to hear what the local P.D.'s have going on. I've been in quite a few pursuits thanks to that thing. It also helps when they give out BOLO's, I get the quick. Other than that, when i'm off.......i'm off, don't listen to anything.
