Where do ghosts come from?
Those of you who believe that ghosts exist, where do you think they come from? Why aren't they in heaven or hell or reincarnated or wherever else you believe dead people usually end up?

I guess I think of them more of an 'energy imprint' than anything else, hence why some are reported to be linked to a traumatic event from much earlier in someone's life from the time that they died. ie., if a ghost is seen of someone in their 20s when the person in question didn't die till their 80s. Other than that...

11-03-07, 02:43 PM #8http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/4-21-2004-53203.aspThe spirit and the body together make our identity. When our body dies, the spirit passes on to a next level of consciousness where the material world is meaningless and impossible to enjoy. But ghosts are merely restless spirits whose passing onto the next world is prevented for a number of reasons. For instance, the person may have died with a need to pass on an urgent message, or to accomplish some unfinished task. In some other cases, the ghost may be angered over its betrayal and murder in life, and cannot rest until the one who has committed the crime is properly punished. A ghost might also, through its misbehavior in life, find itself bound to an unhappy existence between worlds until it finds some sort of way to atone for its actions. A relatively weak spirit might remain under the domination of a greater spirit, who might be continuously tormenting him would not be able to rest until the greater spirit is destroyed, captured or set free. Finally, a ghost may just not know that it has died.Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.

Jenna:
A. You spend way too much time thinking up the sort of stuff that you do.
B. BigDawg, as soon as I finish this reply, you have some rep coming your way.
C. I've never sat and thought about where they come from, but aside from my Great-Grandmother, the only stuff I've ever seen was right before or right after the passing of a patient. Pretty self explanatory there - it's a death thing. As far as my G-Grandma is concerned, I'm guessing she was sent back as a means of protection and comfort through some things I was going through when I was a kid.

Ducky,
Agreed. I think that ghosts are generally an energy imprint...that would explain why they are generally located at the scenes of traumatic events.
That said, I also believe in the ancestral Kami which are not considered to be ghosts...more like guardians. You can turn to them for advice in times of need...but that is when you call them. They don't just float around.
I have never experienced a paranormal event so it would be hard to say anything more specific. I think that the energy imprint theory is maybe the closest that we have since energy can be measured...and does measure high in some haunting cases.

I have actually never had a ghost encounter so I truly don't know. I believe in angels and perhaps that's the same thing, although I've never seen one of them either.
The woman that used to own the house I live in died here in the bathroom in the tub. I was first officer on scene on that night. I had several conversations with her after taking an attempted robbery complaint from her. My family and I affectionately refer to any "unusual" activity as Ms. Geraldine showing her approval or disaproval.
For those of you who don't know me on here I am a Christian and have a firm belief in God. However, anytime I run into a true "unusual" incident I take the extra time to find an explanation for it. (Surprised Jenna?
) I don't see anything wrong with a belief in ghosts I've just never seen one myself. If I ever run into one I hope it's my second grandfather. I miss our talks.

There is an eternal bickering between religion and science but both are a methodology that has been created to help us understand our place in this universe/world. Both systems of thought are limited and both agree that there are things that we cannot ever know about the universe or that we cannot truly know God, He is a mystery that cannot be fully comprehended or why did the Big Bang bang?
The central tenets of mathematics, physics, cosmology, biology etc. exist independently of humans, they are not invented by human endeavour but are in fact discovered. These do not attempt to explain why it is. We are inquisitive and people want to know about the universe, about their lives, about themselves, about their place in the world.
Ghosts and religion are a question of faith. Scientists can ask (or even tell us) to accept that there are no reasons for an event like the big bang, no reasons for the universe to exist, aren’t they ignoring the really big questions, the why? Questions risk being dogmatic in the same way as certain religionists are. (dogma: principle, tenet, doctrinal system laid down by some authority).
It seems to me that the universe is as it is. I am not talking about superstition or religious belief. I think if we arrive at a point of view that says some things can never be proved to either exist or not, then can we say ghosts do or do not exist? I thinks it’s up to the individual to ponder, to research and to come to there own conclusion.

Thanks for your answers, everyone. I don't know if ghosts exist, and have no idea where they come from if they do. I'm also uncertain about the existence of God or the Devil or heaven or hell or the Buddha or reincarnation or the Kami or energy imprints or anything else that scientists have not found evidence for.
Someday I'd like to figure out what does exist and what doesn't and where it all comes from and what it's all about.
If I ever see a ghost I will try to talk to it and ask it questions. The ghost community would probably make fun of me for asking dumb questions, but it would be worth it.
